Thoughts on CS61A @ Community College

Hi I'm a CC student currently attending Laney CC in Oakland and they offer prob the only 61a equiv of all colleges in Cali. I'm thinking about taking it but from what I've read the 61a class offers a thorough taste of berkeley EECS that I feel I would miss out on in my CC class. Do you think taking it at Laney would put me at a disadvantage. BTW I've already considered watching the webcasts as a supplement to my 61a experience at Laney. I have already finished CS61B, CS 61C equivs at Diablo Valley and having all my CS courses done would be such a relief. FYI I'm leaning towards the EE side.

p.s. Do EE's ever find themselves falling back on their CS61abc material?

Well, I think if you’re into EE, no harm in finishing off the requirement elsewhere. The key is to make sure you can transfer credits. I happen to know they can be hard-nosed about replacing 61A, just because it’s supposed to be taught in a specific way. The people I refer to are not knowledgeable professors but the student advisors, who don’t realistically know what they’re doing in terms of the actual substance half the time and handle administrative stuff only.

If you are doing EE, 61A is probably the least important of the lower-divs. If you plan to go into CS, 61A is the most important (not the most useful nor practical, but 61A “is” computer science much more than almost all other CS courses. unfortunately this goes over a lot of people’s heads). BTW, 61A is not a good indication of EECS at Berkeley in terms of workload, difficulty, or grading - 61C and EE20 fit that better. If you know you want to go into signal processing, circuits, device physics, etc… then you can skip 61A and be ok. You can also do fine in CS without 61A, but that class really does teach something beyond the material that’s hard to put into words.

If you’re looking to transfer into EECS, take it; if you don’t take it, it’ll count against you. You’ll be competing with transfers that don’t have CS61a equivalents, yet don’t get docked for not taking it.

Is 61c a lot more difficult than 61a?

Most people I’ve talked to agree that 61A is the easiest of the lower-divs. If you’re an EE person then you’d find 20/40 easier but 61C can have the greatest workload. depends on how you classify “hardness” but in 61A you can reasonably aim for an A+, in 61C not as much.
