Thoughts on Environmental Studies and Applied Chemistry

Hello guys,
I’ve finally committed to Trinity and feels really exited about this. In the mean time, I would love to hear some opinions from you guys who are taking these two majors/minors or who will be taking them. What do you guys think about these majors at Trinity? If you’re planning to take these, why do you guys choose these besides interests (cause I have no idea of why I chose these except for the fact that I like Chemistry :frowning:
Thank you.

Congratulations @MollyN on your decision to attend Trinity U! I am not a student, but our family visited Trinity U recently. One of the things I came away with from the visit was that at this school and other LACs like it, you do not have to be certain about your choice of major. You have the freedom to explore your interests in a variety of academic and extra-curricular areas. And in fact, this sort of exploration is expected and strongly encouraged.

One of the great things about the CSI - Center for the Sciences & Innovation, is that you will have regular exposure to all the sciences at Trinity. And you will have opportunities for research and cross discipline collaboration among and between the sciences and even areas outside of the sciences.

I think your choice to go in with the intention of majoring in Environmental Studies and Chemistry is a great place to start.

I realize you are an International student. Did you have the opportunity to visit before making your decision?

@lots2do unfortunately no :frowning: so this is quite a limitation for me as I couldn’t have a clear picture of the campus and the people there. I did contact some people and they appear to be really nice and helpful, which in some ways reflects a bit about the university, yet I don’t feel like I have the feel yet

About LACs, thanks a lot for your information. I guess this is also why I chose to apply to several LACs as well. I think after my first or second year I would have a more specific idea of what I really want to do.

I guess your child(ren) won’t attend here? Are there any other aspects you’d love to share after your visit cause I would appreciate it a lot.

@MollyN, here is a link to the “Southern LACs” thread where I posted impressions of our Trinity U visit. Note that
I was wrong about Engineering Sciences not being an accredited program - IT IS accredited. Note that I was really reaching when I wrote the CONS section, as there was really nothing about Trinity U we did not like.

There are some other comments on the Southern LACs thread about Trinity U. Look for comments by @ColdinMinny (whose son will be attending Trinity - I believe in CS) and @4kids4colleges.

My S will apply in the fall. He too is interested in Chemistry.

@lots2do thanks a lot for these references! I’ll definitely check them out  Best of luck to your son as well.

@MollyN I took a tour with the head of the Chemistry department, Dr. Chris Purcell.

First, the facilities are unbelievable. He admitted that he is almost embarrassed about how nice they are. They were asked to put together a “wish list” before construction, and they got everything they wanted!

Second, such a nice man, and a deeply committed educator. One of his statements, and I am paraphrasing from memory, was “you are paying a lot of money for your children to come here, and we take that very seriously. We try and teach and counsel your kids as if they are our own.”

Our S is attending this fall, Class of 2019.

Good luck!

@ColdinMinny that sounds really great! I really wish I could visit the school but looks like it creates a really positive view for most people. I also heard about the CSI building. Will your son major in Chemistry as well? and thanks a lot for the comment too

Our S intends to major in CS, but also wants to take a bunch of science courses, including Chemistry. He is 18, so his interests could change.

That CSI building is unbelievable. $230M spent on it. It is the Taj Mahal of science buildings.

They have also revamped their “core curriculum”, starting this year. Looks really interesting. Wish I was going back to school, too!

@ColdinMinny $230M :open_mouth: that’s superb!

About the “core curriculum” do you know whether we will take it for the whole 4 years or just 1 or 2 first years? I kind of heard about Huma and seminar for first year student but yet still a bit vague about it.

They still have HUMA, but have a bunch of other choices. These are first-year seminars. They still have various distribution requirements, including some PE. The two favorite classes for PE are Ballroom Dancing and Trap Shooting.

Good luck!
