I’m thinking about applying to Episcopal HS in Virginia. They seem like a strong academic school that is not overwhelming like the Phillips Schools or other NE prep schools. I want to work hard, but I don’t want to be ultra-stressed everyday.
Does anyone have experience with Episcopal? Is it a good school? Does it have social balance?

Thanks for the page, @skieurope!
@preppywannabe, my daughter will be a 9th grader at EHS this fall, so we don’t have direct experience yet. But she and we chose Episcopal for some of the reasons you mentioned above. She wanted to be in an environment with excellent academics and extracurricular opportunities without a super-competitive vibe. Over several visits, we have found EHS to be warm and welcoming, and 100% boarding is a plus. Also, my daughter was drawn to the proximity to Washington, D.C. The school does a wonderful job of taking advantage of its location!
If you have specific questions, I would be happy to try to answer them.
@busymommyof4 looked at this one and has some good insights and positive impressions (but no kids there). You might want to PM if you don’t get a response.
@preppywannabe - both of my children (boy and girl) seriously considered EHS! The academics and location are both great! The school is beautiful and we were very impressed. We were concerned that the social environment might be a little too athletic focused for our son though. My daughter liked it a lot, but ultimately chose another school. I do have a neighbor whose daughter graduated and also warned us that it can be a little “fast” socially, but I don’t have any first hand experience. Hope that helps!
You should check out St. Andrew’s School in Delaware. We were impressed with the beautiful campus (featured in Dead Poets Society), top-notch academics, impressive leadership (the head of school is much admired by other school heads), and most of all, the community and culture.
