DO school are tend to focus on primary care so it’s tough to get into surgical fields but it’s not impossible. Orthopedic surgeon I went to is a DO and a very good one.
Congratulations to everyone who got into GPPA and MIT.
Not sure they are opting for or no other choice For whatever the reasons, DO schools class size is much higher than MD schools. Typical MD school is 100-150/yr but I heard some DO schools have 300+ and some have multiple campuses across different states and I believe most are private.
I want to self study some pre-med course requirements over the summer, mostly because I like to keep myself busy and typically do some sort of summer study, any recommendation for online sources to study courses like biology, chemistry, etc? I’ve used Khan academy before since it’s free but am not sure if there are better online sources or if a physical textbook would be a better option. Thanks for any advice y’all can provide
Buy a MCAT prep-book SET from one of the vendor’s Kaplan or Princeton Review. Study the parts which interest you - General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology (Organ System) etc. It may even improve your grades during UG in these classes.
Is one better the other Kaplan or Princeton (I imagine not but just asking since they are a bit expensive )? Also is it worth paying more to get the most up to date set or is one from 2019 fine?
IMO, 2019 edition would be fine.
At the same time, number of residencies seats did not increase. So the number of medical graduates (MD+DO+FMG+IMG) to compete against residencies number of seats is not in alignment. So it is a simple supply vs demand and hence getting residencies is harder.
@coldindorf Don’t want to lead to another rat hole of MD vs DO (similar to BS/MD vs Regular route). If the student is clear about medicine, understands the philosophy about DO (total wellness) vs MD, very clear about Primary care area, then go for DO. But at this age are you so sure about it OR you simply want to go to DO because of desperation OR realized since the competitiveness is so less compared to BS/MD or MD regular route.
In general would suggest if you are reasonably good in academics and test taking, go for UG and work hard to fulfill your dream. If you are not able to get MD after 1 or 2 attempts try for DO.
Residencies are mainly funded via congressional appropriations.
Democrats like to spend money so hopefully they will increase residencies
We need those discussions to keep thread alive On serious note I agree 100%.
has anyone heard from the brooklyn BA/MD program?
Even if that happens, they may not increase in highly sought after areas but in primary care fields.
I don’t think they should increase specialists, shortage is for primarycare.
Yup, waitlisted. Accepted 15 and waitlisted 30 kids.
