Thread for BSMD 2020-2021 Applicants (Part 2)

@rk1235rk IMO, UCF may not be a bad choice based on almost free ride for UG and with ability to opt out. It depends on one’s risk profile.

For ORMs MCAT score of 510 is too low unless they have very strong ECs.

A MCAT 510 (one sitting) was in reference to Hofstra requirement for matriculation to medical school which is below national average ~512.

Is there a proof for this? Seems like contradictory statements. Didn’t they change to 7 years after MCAT changes in 2015?

UCF is 8 years. If one becomes a doctor 1 year early (with 7 years), will it not balance out UG cost?

If you discount one year earning over a long period (MD journey), it may not matter whether it is a 7 yrs or 8 yrs. The present value of one year earning in the last year will decline very fast. One may need a financial calculator to do PV analysis.

Remember someone posting a link to some report done on Penn BSMD students who graduated from the program. It concluded BSMD students are at par with traditional students. Will try to find the report link.

Is it at par or better than traditional path? I always have issues with claims that they are doing better than traditional path and getting 100 percentile in MCAT with no prep.

This is from their FAQ

5. Do all PMM students complete the programs?
Typically, several students of each entering cohort do not meet the MCAT and/or PMM academic performance levels. Subsequent advising is tailored to each student’s situation and goals. Sometimes a PMM student changes their career objective but, overall, most students are successful in the program.

Requirements are 3.5/504

Personally I hate the UCF campus. It looks like a bad 90s strip mall with waaaay too many students

yeah, google says in 2017, student population = 66,183.

The UCF Health Sciences campus is at Lake Nona.
“Our location in Lake Nona’s Medical City, with esteemed neighbors including Nemours Children’s Hospital, the University of Florida Research and Academic Center, the VA Medical Center and the forthcoming UCF Lake Nona Medical Center, is unrivaled and ensures we’ll continue to epitomize innovation and transform healthcare for generations to come.”

No one is underestimating it but let’s also not overestimate it. An MCAT score will not make up for poor manners. Thank you for the information.

It is not the question of manners, just difference of opinion. MCAT has its importance.

BTW, you are not dealing with a student here  Medical schools used MCAT score as an indicator for USMLE Step 1 scores hence gave lot of importance and also as a differentiator between different schools GPA.

You are talking to a parent not a fellow applicant. MCAT and USMLE are used for admissions purposes but also good indicators for test taking. MCAT is an indicator for USMLE scores and USMLE scores may be indicator for board passing. Unfortunately medicine has lot of testing and one needs those skills in addition to bedside manners. So selecting BSMD purely to avoid MCAT is not a wise decision. Again those who have strong test taking skills (like 5s in APs, 6/7 in IB and 800s in SAT IIs) should not be afraid of MCAT.

Unfortunately facts are stubborn and telling the truth and facts matters most whether we like it or not.

On that note, just got an email that PSU - SKMC MCAT score for 2021 cohort is 508 or more - with a minimum of 127 in chem, physics and biology and a minimum of 126 in the CARS.

508 is a steal for ORMs

it seems PSU/SKMC is moving closer to national average ~512. The previous MCAT 504 was too low.

Students who interviewed with AMC during 3rd and 4th week of Feb did anyone hear from them? Please update. Thank you in advance.
