Thread for the poor souls that didn't get asked to submit LOR

Post your stats here, since it seems the majority people on the other thread got asked to submit their letters of recommendation.

I’ll start it off. 3.5 UW 3.96 W, 4.1 UC GPA. Maintained a 4.0 since the second semester of sophomore year, difficult life circumstances, yadda yadda.

In-state, California resident. Submitted application on 11/29.

2230 (740 R 720 M 770W 11E)

Oh, and post your theories on how people were chosen to submit their letters of rec.

3.8 UW 4.23 W
4.25 UC GPA
SAT I: 2170 (770 R 670 M 730 W)
Major: Interdisciplinary Studies
Difficult family circumstances, mediocre leadership/ec but shows passion.
Submitted on 11/28
Essay ideas were unique and personal, but I didn’t get an opportunity to have others check it.

It seems like a lot of applicants with great stats have received them, so it doesn’t look like they’re sending these to just borderline applicants. Looks like those that fit the top 20% get requests. Not sure if that’s a good thing for us. Sort of bummed out  but I’m just hoping for the best. I really did hope to get a request. I have a few teachers who are familiar with my involvements in school and my improvements in academics. A letter of rec from them would have been a better representation of me as a student and individual.

Alright, so I just checked my portal and apparently I’ve been invited to submit my letters of rec.

"After an initial review of your application, we invite you to submit letters of recommendation to add to your admission application. This involves asking one or two people who know you well (including one teacher) to submit a letter or recommendation on your behalf.

Here are a few points to consider:
This is optional and not required. If you decide not to submit letters of recommendation as part of your application, we will continue to evaluate your file with the information you provided in your UC Application.
You have the option of submitting up to two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from an academic teacher.
To give your recommender(s) enough time to respond, please initiate the request within the next five days. Visit our website for tips on how to ask teachers and counselors to support you with a letter of recommendation.
DEADLINE: The deadline for your recommenders to electronically submit their letters of recommendation to UC Berkeley is January 15, 2016."

This is pretty weird, because the email that I got claimed that I wasn’t selected to submit any letters of rec.

If you haven’t already, log in to https://apply.berkeley.edu/account/login and check to see if you got the same thing as me.

@yinuos Same! I just checked my portal and also have received an invitation… For some reason, the email that claimed that I wasn’t selected to submit any letters of rec only appears on my gmail account on my computer. If I were to go on my gmail through my browser or phone, I can’t find the email anywhere…Not sure what to do now.

@yinuos @ttn2016 Same thing happened to me. Saw the email on my phone saying I had not been selected to submit LOR’s but signed in to the portal through the link you provided and now it says I’m invited to submit LOR’s. So I’m also not sure what to do; I’m hoping that the university will release a statement soon to clear this up.

Anyway, my stats are as follows:
UC GPA: 4.29
ACT Composite: 33 (34 Math, 33 CR, 34 Science, 30 W)
Major: Microbial Biology (College of Natural Resources)
ELC Eligible
EC’s include yearbook editor in chief, varsity athletics, class vice president, club president, academic league, hospital volunteer
Submitted 11/27
In-state

Good luck to both of you in the admissions process. Hopefully we will hear some guidance about LOR’s soon!

@JPhilly99 I hope they address this issue too. I just got on winter break today, so it would be nice to know if I should start contacting my teachers for LOR’s. I also don’t want to get my hopes up too high. Good luck to you and @yinuos also!

Yeah, I got the same “we don’t need a letter email” but the portal asks for one.

I’ve been thinking… does this just mean that they won’t consider our letters of recommendation even if we send them through the portal?

I’m still a bit confused. I guess we’ll have to wait for a response from the university.

My UC GPA is a 3.55, my SAT is 2330, and I’m in-state applying for CS in CAS. My theory is that they asked potential candidates to submit letters and are filtering them out using letters of rec (they asked 20% of applicants to submit letters, which happens to be around their acceptance rate). Or maybe they are asking borderline applicants, which depresses me, because I thought I’d be borderline for sure with my stats. oh well :frowning:

Ok the same thing is happening with me!

I got the email yesterday from Cal that it was the last day for LOR’s and I was not a chosen applicant. Then I came on a thread and someone posted a link to the Cal portal for applicants, and that link shows LOR requests rather than the normal Cal portal link.

I think it’s a glitch, but I am going to call Cal monday and confirm.

Regular portal: https://apply.berkeley.edu/account/login?r=https%3a%2f%2fapply.berkeley.edu%2fapply%2fstatus

Portal that show’s LOR requests: https://apply.berkeley.edu/account/login

Also I think it’s important to note that the people that didn’t receive requests for LOR’s are not necessarily “poor souls.” Any theories about why someone was selected over someone else is just speculation and you shouldn’t let it get you down! You’ll only know your admissions decision for sure when they announce it in March or whenever.

Lol, Cal, why do you have to tease me like this?!?

@JPhilly99 Right. It’s all just speculation, especially since this is the first year that they’re doing this.

For many people though, not having the ability to send in letters of rec would put them at a disadvantage compared to people who have great letters of rec to send in, which is why a lot of people are concerned.

guys do not and i mean DO NOT attempt to send rec letters with an unauthorized link. My best friend used the one that sent to my email, thinking she had gamed the system. She assigned her teachers and thought all was well. That is, until her teachers try to submit. No matter how many times her teachers tried they could not submit. But on her end she was not able to delete the teachers. Now she has two teachers with nonresponse on their end, which looks horrible. And whether Berkeley knows she had even been asked for letters in the first place is unknown. 4.4 GPA and 35 ACT wasted for nothing.

@scoobysnacks56 …The same thing happened to a student in my computer science class. I think you’re right; this is just a glitchy link.

What was the link that your friend used? Was it https://apply.berkeley.edu/account/login?

@MiniLion With those stats, UC Davis has an exception computer science program. Or maybe community college and transfer? Do you have a good reason for the disparity in between GPA and SAT? How difficult is your high school?

Also I’m just going to end this by saying that calling the Berkeley admissions will be fruitless. The admissions officers are already on their breaks and the clerks at the office won’t have much insight as they don’t deal with the issue directly. You weren’t asked for rec letters for a reason so don’t do anything rash. Maybe they already accepted you?

@yinuos Yes it was this link, unfortunately :frowning:
