My rising junior S is looking for MT schools that have a concentration in voice and acting. We are already visiting UMich, Carnegie Mellon and Baldwin Wallace. Any suggestions would be incredible helpful.
muhlenberg college should be on your list.
A list of Second tier MT schools is subjective. Most agree for MT that CMU, Michigan and CCM are tops. Some say “lottery” schools. Meaning it is like winning the lottery to get in.
However, there are a lot of fantastic programs and if audition based are still hard to get into. 8-10% admit rate is better than less than 4% rate but it is still highly selective. Any school that draws a national audition pool (attends unifieds for example) is stiff competition. Some of the more regionally based programs may have smaller number of applicants.
Does anyone on the board know the admit rate for Drake U MT or Nebraska Wesleyan? Illinois Wesleyan is regionally based too and has MT. Milikin?
Another I hear great things about but is not discussed much here is the MT program at Southeast Missouri State (SEMO). Some very talented kids go there and it is very reasonable cost. Just not discussed much here. What i have seen them produce is tier one work but they don’t have a huge reputation (yet) so less applicants.
Rockford university in IL also has less applicants.
Don’t know much about the MT program.
Marymount Manhattan admits a fairly large class (by BFA/audition based BA standards). But they have a national draw.
Check out your state school. You may be surprised what they offer I didn’t know our state flagship had a BFA option - it does. Just not one with a huge reputation.
Good luck.
