Time management

I would like to know from a person thats experienced in this ( someone who has graduated college or at least finished 1-2 years successfully ). Well I got into a pretty competitive college, and all my dad keeps telling me is to STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY. Obviously I would like a very high GPA but my dean of my field tells me to not constantly study or you will go crazy but try to widen myself by joining some EC's. She also said time management is probably the single most important thing in college and it obviously is. I would just like to know from someone thats experienced in this ( and has a high GPA ) to tell me whats the best way to manage my time. I mean, would i have to constantly study? What times do I study? When do I take breaks and for how long? Should I join some clubs or mostly concentrate on getting my GPA to 4.0? Any other suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

bump..anybody please?

Theres no advice thats going to work for everyone for every class. You're going to have courses where you can go to class, review your notes a little bit, write a couple papers and get an A. You'll also have classes where you do hours of homework a week, have time consuming projects, and study for tests for hours. You have to be adaptable in your studying. A couple tips though.

When you're studying make sure that's all you're doing. I suggest going to the library or somewhere quiet with no TVs, don't even try to study in your dorm. An hour spent studying in the library is going to be worth two and half hours in your dorm room where your roommate is watching some MTV garbage and somebody is playing hall soccer. As for breaks, I suppose if you're going to have a marathon 5 hour study session or something it would be a good idea to go take a walk every couple hours. I tend to study or do homework in blocks of about an hour anyway though.

Study during the day between classes. Time management is mostly just not wasting time. Think about it this way, if you've got an hour between classes you could go back to your dorm for an hour, or you could stop at the library and do homework for an hour. That hour that you spend doing homework is an hour extra that you'll have that evening to do whatever you need to. If you don't have class till 11 don't sleep till 10:30, wake up at 9:00 anyway and do some work then.

Do ECs. Join clubs related to your major/passion, they'll help a LOT with everything. You can get study partners, network for the future, resume padding, etc. If you manage your time and don't overextend yourself you'll have time for ECs. Besides, most won't care if you have to stop attending if you get stretched too thin, as long as you aren't at a leadership position. By the time you got to a leadership position you'd probably have an idea of how much time you had though.

Go have fun sometimes. You exist for reasons other than boosting your GPA and padding your resume. Go see some movies with friends, go to parties, whatever social things you like to do. Otherwise you'll get VERY burnt out and probably go crazy. Yes, there will be times that you more or less have to lock yourself in the library and disappear to the outside world for a week, but there is certianly time to have a good time.

i see, thanks a lot.
