Time to face facts

A couple things after reading the last few days worth of posts,

Decisions most likely won't be out until the 31st (definitely not before the 28th), and you WILL be notified when they come, so stop frantically hitting refresh on the website.

If you have a SAT composite below 1200/1600, it's time to pack and go home. I honestly don't know why people with sub-1000 SAT scores waste the $50 admissions fee applying. No, your "really good subjective factors" don't make up for that abysmal 500 on the SAT CR. UMD is ALL ABOUT numbers, no one really cares about your " essays or reccomendations.

Merit scholarships come out in March, so stop asking.

You need around a 4.4/5.0 to get into the honors college. This means taking almost every AP class offered to you. Only GPA matters for this, not even SAT scores are factors in honors college admissions.

LEP admission is even tougher. At least for Smith, you need at least a SAT of 1300/1600 to even have your application looked at.

That's the end of my rant, all questions will be settled soon enough I suppose.

Tell me why you posted this. You had no reason to post this, allow us to freak out, ask questions, and talk about rumors when the decisions come out. If our posts bother you why not leave this board, and go back to living your life. And why bring down the hopes of other people, there is no need to do that, they might not have an amazing chance of acceptance, but they do have a chance.

I posted this because College Confidential is a vacuous circle jerk, when it doesn’t need to be. There isn’t anything wrong with stating facts, and I think the information provided in my original post had some good information.

Edit: Also, false hope is worse then no hope. The sooner people learn the truth, the quicker they can move on with their life.

It is not false hope, I never said they had an amazing chance, but I didn’t say they would be outright rejected like you did. All colleges accept people below the average all the time, so whose to say these guys won’t be those students. Also, there is an excellent chance of the decisions coming out on Monday, since both the UMD website and several UMD advisors said that is the projected date. And yes, you did have some good information, but it came across very pompous and arrogant.

Wow, ijustcantknow, you’re just a regular Dale Carnegie, aren’t you? ([How to Win Friends & Influence People: Dale Carnegie: 9780671027032: Amazon.com: Books](http://www.amazon.com/How-Win-Friends-Influence-People/dp/0671027034))

Lol @ reason number 2 being all about me. I applied to UMD because I have faith that they can see past the bad and see the good in me. I don’t consider my $50 “wasted” because I am applying to my dream school. Chasing a dream sometimes requires a little financial input. As far as I am concerned, you are not an admissions officer, so you do not have standing to tell me that I will flat out be rejected. Whatever the outcome may be, I am just happy that I was not afraid to apply to a school that seems to be a monumental reach.

I agree with futuredoctor31

I honestly still don’t know why you posted this, some of your information was good, but easily accesible in other threads on this board or from the UMD website. And you unjustly attacked people with somewhat of lesser stats than you. I think you just had a bad day, and wanted to vent your anger, but you had no reason to post this topic. This board is very nice and cooperative with each other, so if you can’t be the same I kindly ask you to leave.

Edit: Also futuredoctor31, good for you, chase your dream, and don’t let people like this guy get you down. You already got into a great school in Penn State, so you stand a good chance of getting into UMD, and continuing your dream.

I don’t see why Maryland would only accept applicants in the 1200-1600 range. They’re a state school, not an Ivy League.
Also, pertaining to the 4.4/5.0 GPA, many schools don’t really offer APs. Additionally, you can have a rigorous schedule without having taken many APs. Or, you can self study for APs and it wouldn’t show on your transcript.

My son was contacted for a scholarship interview a couple of years ago, and I think it was before March. I’m sure he found out about honors with his application or very close to it.

Because they can. Or pretty nearly, anyway. The bottom quartile for Critical Reading is about 580, and the bottom quartile for Math is about 610. Applicants who score around the bottom quartile on both sections are unlikely to get in unless they can dunk a basketball with two hands.

Hey – ijustcan’tknow,

Nice thread! You must have tons of friends. Also by the way, recommendation is spelled with one “C” and two "M"s. (Check the first post of this thread for the incorrect spelling).

My advice
1 Be nice
2. Get a spelling book - never too late to learn phonics… and sight words too!

Good luck to all in their college process.

The original post defeats the purpose of CC. This site was made for people to freak out, ask questions, etc. and like previously posted, don’t put other people down about their scores. You aren’t on the admissions committee.

Get over yourself.

I see, Sikorsky. Some people from my school have made it in with lower than 1200 SATs, but I believe they played sports.

…or had some other quality besides their quantitative stats that appealed to the admissions office in College Park.

OP: That tone was unnecessary. If those questions bother you, don’t read them.

Most people here know that notifications will arrive between Jan. 28-31. Prospective students are excited or anxious about their decisions. In previous years there have been certain times where Maryland has released their decisions early.

Yes, you generally need around a 1200, but that is not a firm figure. If you are an athlete, minority, or have an amazing GPA, you might get the nod.

Merit scholarships. This is CC and some forums have stickies or FAQs, but this forum does not have this one answered. I don’t see this question answered with a lot of authority here. I can understand why this question comes up a lot.

4.4 and all APs for Honors. I think that is a bit of an exaggeration. I would say it is over 4.0 though. My daughter’s school has about 30 AP courses available. She took 6 AP classes, and many honors courses, but definitely not every available AP course. Yes she did have a 4.6 and got into Honors at UMD.

LEP. I don’t have enough experience to comment on this. I think you are right about the 1300 figure though.

Exactly. I joined CC because it’s the home stretch and I’m FREAKING OUT. So I nicely ask you to let me freak out.

my school does GPA as a percentage… how would I find out what that is on a 5.0 scale?

i guess you just divide by 20 for the 5 scale but im not really sure how your school calculates the percents so i cant be really sure… in general to get something from a 100 scale to a 5 scale divide by 20… or by 25 for the 4 scale.

yea its all really confusing. if you take a college prep class, you multiply your final grade in that class by 1.05, if you take honors you multiply by 1.1, and AP is multiplied by 1.15. Then they average all them together and you get your gpa… so you can have above a 100 percent. Idk I swear my highschool just does things to be difficult.
