Time to start thinking about colleges...

Yep. I am finally a junior... well, assuming juniors are created at the beginning of the summer? Anyway, I remember that last year, I came on hear after getting my AP scores, boohooing about a 4. Well I've grown out of that, but I decided to come back here with all my new stuff. My dad says he wants me to make a list of colleges I am interested in. Of course, MIT was there in seconds, but I am having trouble thinking of other places. I want to go to a college where they have a lot of AI research, as that is what interests me most(I want to do research in AI). I would also like a uni that is in a downtownish area, where you can walk half a block and see all sorts of cool stores. Thats because I lived in the suburbs my whole life.

So perhaps if I post my scores, could you guys tell me of some colleges I have a reasonable shot at getting into?

I know this is cheesy, but I have compiled a resume type thing, that basically has all my high school stuff.

Well... just tell me what you think. I have to go mow the lawn.

Some thoughts: I heard that Berkley has a nice CS program, and I think Caltech would also be great to reach for. I am also considering Stanford.

Do any of the Ivies have good CS programs?

Carnegie Mellon

I think Brown has a CS program in the top 15 (from the Gourman report around 1994). I believe Yale's is good too, although that could be completely unsubstantiated. Both of those schools don't have great engineering in general, though. I would bet Cornell's CS would be good and Princeton has good engineering, so maybe them to. I was looking at an intership program at Xerox PARC and they said they only take students from Stanford, MIT, Cornell and one other school (it may have been Caltech or Berkeley).

MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon have the best ones. I believe University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign is right below them. I don't think you should go to Caltech for CS if you can get into a school from the top four.

Harvey Mudd?

Harvey Mudd has very smart students, but their majors are very broad. They have Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Computer Science, and Math. But general engineering isn't going to come up too big for jobs. If you can get into Harvey Mudd, you can probably have a shot at MIT and Stanford, and a very good shot at Carnegie Mellon and Berkeley. I wouldn't recommend Harvey Mudd, unless you like their very eccentric atmosphere or something like that.

Olin may be worth looking at.

University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign is great for CS. I don't know about their acceptance rates, but you may want to look into their programs.
