Time?

How much time do Admissions people spend on an application?
Do they just look over it within 30 minutes and are like "no" or "yes"... Or do they actually discuss it with others and put some thought into it- and actually analyze the application?

30 minutes? way too long.

I'd say it's usually around 5 to 10 minutes (if you are lucky) per app.

5 to 10 min? I seriously doubt that.

Here's my take:

At least 2 admissions officers read the essay -- both would take about 2~3 min each. Then discussion for about 2 min.

Then they review transcript -- another 3~5 min for thoughts/discussion

Extra-Curriculars -- about 5~10 min

Overall qualities -- 5~8 min

So IMO, you do get about 30 min. However, this depends on the school and its policies. Example: HYPS -- I bet they would look at transcipt then Standardized Testing -- if these are below average, they would toss the application.

However, Holistic approach schools...such as JHU...look at the entire application. Meaning these (nice) admissions counselors look at the application with more time and thought.

And I'm quoting this part from a college admissions book: "as you can see, most applications receive at least 2 or 3 reviews by different admissions officers, and an application may get as many as 4 to 8 readings before the committee makes the final decision."

I don't think your future could be decided in 5 to 10 min.

Read this blog post from AdmissionsDaniel

Its 5-10. I went to tour campus. THey said it was about that. Maybe 15 if lucky.

i highly doubt they will spend more time on ec's then on transcript

Yup, from Daniel's blog:
"Where to start? Well the best way I can describe how I evaluate a single application is to describe it as a conversation. Once I pick up the file I begin this conversation with the applicant that typically can last 15 - 20 minutes."

Let's do some math:

30 minutes/app. How many apps were there last year? around 12000 right?

30 min. times 12000= 360000 minutes needed for a total of 12000 apps.
That is around 6000 hours, or 250 days (24/7) to complete reviewing every single app. NOT possible.

Assuming your estimate is correct, 250 days would seem like a lot, except that there is a staff of more than one person reading applications....

Even assuming that only ten people read applications for 8 hours a day each, that would only require each of them to spend 75 days reading apps. More than enough time between January 1 and April 1 to do that. And a lot of them spend way more than 8 hours a day reading apps. I promise.

Read my blog entry -- I think I am actually an accurate source being that I actually read applications for Hopkins:
