OK, Instead of me trolling all of the websites, about when do the audition dates and audition requirements come out? I know the requirements are about the same every year but I heard a muttering somewhere of a contemporary pop song possibly going in the mix?

Some are already posted. I know Coastal Carolina, Elon, James Madison and Texas State are all up on their websites. Now is a great time to plug those requirements and dates into your spreadsheet!

Between now and September. No way around it, you have to monitor the web sites of all the schools at which you intend to audition.

Penn State dates and requirements are posted on their website.

I know I need to monitor the sites but thought if there was a day that was targeted, I’d have my pen and paper handy…

Unfortunately, there is no uniform date by which audition info is updated. It varies from school to school. When my daughter was auditioning, some schools posted updated audition dates and requirements as early as mid-July and 1 that I recall did not until September. One school required you to submit your application electronically first and then set up an account through which you were required to schedule your audition electronically. It was only when you accessed the electronic portal after your application was submitted that you could see audition dates and times.

Agreed…you feel somewhat like a stalker of these sites as you’re waiting for their dates to be posted (and a few were up almost as soon as they finished the rounds for the Class of 2015!) One thing kiddo and I did was to buy a cheap blank calendar and fill in IN PENCIL evey audition date that a school posted. If they were slower than we would have liked in getting their new data up, we would look at the previous year’s dates and assume (usually correctly) that the new dates would be pretty much the same (i.e. if the 17th was a Friday in Jan last year, the closest Friday this year was probable) and we also marked those in with an asterisk, she she knew to go back and keep looking.

It helped to know which schools on her list had posted their dates, which to watch for updated info. In addition, it really helped with logistics for planning travel – could she do two in a weekend with travel between schools A and B, was school C a better wait until Unifieds, does this school offer rolling artistic admissions or better talent scholarship consideration for an earlier audition, etc. We also plugged in important “home” things (it IS senior year, after all – she was willing to give up Homecoming dances, but NOT the fall play…had to make sure nothing got scheduled during finals week, etc). Since I work full-time, needed to get these scheduled as reasonably (and confirmed as early as possible) so I could request vacation time as needed, etc. As we figured all our needs out, a priority of dates emerged…so she placed those in order (which helped in the apps, which often asked for first, second, third choice of audition dates).

Another thought that does go along with timing – do the physical applications to colleges as soon as you can – if a school requires you to be accepted or at least apply to the school before granting an audition date, you’ve got that hurdle over with. Teachers and guidance aren’t as stressed if asked for recommendations, etc early in the year, and it can open up opportunities for academic scholarship competitions and academic merit awards, some of which have earlier deadlines. The sooner the app is in, the more likely a student is to get their first choice of audition dates (and it becomes a shell game of sorts – many schools had auditions on the same weekends, and a kid can’t be in 7 cities in one day…so if you have the choice to get things lined up in a reasonable fashion, the year goes smoother, from a logistics standpoint.) It’s easier on the auditioning kiddo, too – to get the essays, etc DONE before the audition season really hits. In kiddo’s case, she was able to get her first choice of every audition date she wanted…which was one of the things that kept the house of cards that is an audition year from tumbling!

Just call the theatre depts of the various schools. They will give you the info usually.

Gee Lulu that’s a great idea- I’m sure they have the dates figured out well before the website gets updated.

Thanks. It’s what we did last year. Made it easier to get organized. They will even tell you when to call to get the appts.
