Application Deadline and Audition

Kiddo is hoping for the November 12 audition at UMich. Their website posted an application deadline of 10/1. She dutifully sent off her Common App on 9/10, and begged guidance, teachers, etc to get their pieces in. Finally, guidance got rolling near the end of the month (we have a school that does NOT understand anyone who would consider anything but the state college in town, and had no clue about the whole MT audition piece…but that’s for another rant). Anyway, she checked Wolverine Access, and all pieces are showing up except for her transcript. (I’ve got an email into the high school to try to find out when they sent it.)

Now…here’s the thing. She checked the help on Wolverine Access, and it says “don’t bother us!” until at least 10 days after the items were sent (it took them about that long to download her Common App, but they were pretty quick with the secondary school report). Is she out of the running to be offered an audition on 11/12 if all the materials haven’t been forwarded to SMTD already? I remember she had to go through a similar pre-approval for MPulse last summer, but that didn’t have the extra layer of admissions. Has anyone heard about an audition for this year yet? For those who auditioned in prior years, anybody remember how soon you received academic clearance for your date?

Good Morning Mommafrog, When I read your first paragraph, my thoughts were, maybe her daughter goes to school here. LOL. When my daughter was applying two years ago, no one understood, and they were clueless on how difficult it was. Everything was geared to students staying in state…so frustrating.

As far as academic acceptance and audition request. If I remember correctly, Michigan was the last application my daughter did, for two reasons, it was the most important to her and it was the most complicated and time consuming. She barely made the Dec. deadline and we had requested the last audition in March that was still open for scholarship consideration. We heard the early part of January that she had the date she had requested. I know it was very difficult for me to wait on scheduling flights and hotels etc, we had a long way to travel to get to all of the schools she auditioned for. Since Michigan is looking at academic clearance to audition I don’t believe it takes as long, the student has not been truly accepted till they are accepted after auditioning.

Good luck!!! My daughter is a sophomore and absolutely loves it!!! Wishing you a fun and successful audition season and all the best!!!

MommaFrog, my D auditioned for Michigan MT last year, November time frame. I just looked back at the log we kept for Michigan:
Tues 9/1-sent SAT scores online
Tues 9/1-requested teacher recs (mailed by end of Sept)
Thurs 9/4 sent ACT scores online
Mon 9/28-sent academic/audition/repertoire application online;requested 11/20 audition
Tues 9/29-received email confirmation from Michigan of application acceptance
Tues 10/6-received “University of Michigan Audition Date” email from Kate Harkness, auditions coordinator, confirming D’s requested Nov 20th audition date in Ann Arbor.
Note: this email included a checklist of “Status of Required Audtion Materials” confirming that D’s Resume and Repertoire List had been received with her application but that she
still had until 3 weeks prior to audition date to send/email her Audition Repertoire. She emailed this to Kate Harkness on Monday Oct 26th. I think some folks fill in this when they complete the original app, others like to defer listing their audition pieces until the last possible moment, as was my daughter’s preference.
D had a great audition experience in Ann Arbor; Brent Wagner definitely runs a first-class operation. Although Michigan’s app/audition definitely had the most hoops to jump through (by far!) and my daughter ultimately was not accepted, as a parent I found Michigan’s process to be one well-oiled machine and logistically they really leave no stone unturned.
So, to answer your question, for my D “it was a week.” Best of luck to your D in her audition endeavors this year!
