I'm starting my college essay soon and decided to choose writing about a person I admire. I'm choosing to write about my mother, who is battling cancer. Can anyone give tips on how to make this essay an effective one. Should i try to evoke as much emotion as possible in my essay? Or will it make it seem like poor me, admit me because I've had a tragic experience in my life.

Any tips will be useful, I need all the information I can get. Thank you for your time.

Emotion is good as long as it isn’t overdone; one key aspect is to show the reader your emotion instead of telling about it or stating it outright… Using strong verbs without relying on a lot of flowery adjectives is important

Be natural and let the emotion show through your reactions and behavior rather than saying “I was sad.”
Don’t be afraid to use a narrative-style tone or be casual.

It won’t turn into a, “poor me, admit me because I’ve had a tragic experience in my life” kind of essay if you’re able to portray that there was a positive outcome from this experience. Everybody has been through some sort of traumatizing background, how you choose to write it and evoke those emotions is what makes it unique.
