The last practice SAT I took I got a 1380 composite- 660 reading and writing and 720 math. I had a writing test score of 32, which was a major reason why my score was low. I have reviewed writing and should not be able to get a score of 35 or 36 if not higher. When I take my next practice test I’ll probably get a score in the 1400s. I am also trying to get my math score higher, by trying to avoid careless mistakes and practice more, but reading is not seeming to be improving. On the last reading practice test I took, I got a score of 33, compared to 34 on the full practice test I did. I am currently taking a prep program, though I routinely seem to miss 7-9 questions in reading. My goal is a 1500 composite score by maximizing my math score and trying to get my reading score up. I will be taking the August SAT. Does anyone have any advice on how I could improve my reading score, especially anyone who has had scores like mine and were able to bring them up?
I don’t really know about reading scores, but if you want to improve your math scores, I HIGHLY recommend Khan Academy. Before doing Khan Academy’s math practice, I used to get around 690-740 on math (official practice tests). After doing a lot of math practice on Khan Academy, I got a 790 on math for the real SAT. On top of that, it was EXTREMELY easy.
As for reading, again, idk. I am on the same boat as you. I got a 640 on my reading portion, and it is becoming a heavy drawback to my SAT score. I am working on improving my reading, but I think I will need more than Khan Academy this time.
The greatest improvement for reading for me came from using a Barron’s reading for the new SAT workbook. It took me a while to get accustomed to the type of questions, but the Barron’s prep book for reading had a ton of questions and you should be able to start to see a pattern. It also depends on what type of reading questions you’re struggling on – if it’s vocab, then focus on vocab lists formulated by SAT prep guides. If it’s evidence or analysis you’re struggling with, practice as much reading as you can (without wasting too many practice tests). Khan Academy is a good resource, at least to build these skills.
Thanks. For math, what I miss tends to be careless mistakes and occasionally a problem that I don’t know how to solve, for example, yesterday I got a 750 on a math section where each mistake was a stupid one. As for reading, I got a 48/52 on a section yesterday, so I don’t know if I got lucky because I usually miss more. I will be doing another reading section today to see how I do.
