Hello! So I’ve got 1190 on the October SAT(630- English, 560 math). However, I will not apply EA as I am not satisfied with my result and will risk rejection. I have one month to prepare for the December SAT. I am an international student.
I’ve taken all 8 college board tests. I am thinking about taking them all over again and going though my mistakes. Is this approach good? Any tips would be appreciated.
Oh and I am willing to put enormous effort, so don’t tell me that it is impossible
I am watching students make these type of improvements by working with a private tutor.
I did go to sat class before the October one.
Not group class but one-on-one private tutor.
Unfortunately, I am not from the USA and cannot afford to pay 150$ per hour.
https://www.khanacademy.org/sat is free
if you are willing to spend some money, get some test prep books - I like PWN the SAT for math and Erica Meltzer’s grammar and critical reading books. Amazon ships internationally if you cant find these books in your home country, you might also check out the blogs associated with these books, that’s free too.
I agree with @3scoutsmom . Those are the best books and Kahn helps as well.
We were willing to get S19 a tutor if he needed one but we started with these books. He went from a 1380 (640EW. 740M) to a 1540 (740EW, 800M) by hunkering down with these books this summer. That being said, he REALLY studied. Did almost every section in the books, worked on Kahn, and took practice tests under real constraints four times over the summer before he took the test. If you really want to improve, you have to work at it. He worked probably 10-12 hours a week for seven weeks before the test. It was summer, so he had time.
Thank you! Although I have only a month thus ordering a book internationally is not an option.
Make sure that after you take the practice tests, you go over your mistake to understand why you got the questions wrong. For math, maybe consider buying College Panda Math for learning the content. Then, you can practice on UWorld, which has great questions and explanations. You can also set the difficulty level.
Thank you!
Hey I want to ask do you think Uworld would be better than Khan Academy practice? I read that uworld is kind of a new Sat platform and khan academy is College approved. What is your opinion ?
Jumping in here… A lot of students use both Khan and UWorld together. Kahn for videos to help create understanding of specific subjects and UWorld for practice questions. The UWorld SAT question bank is extensive and helps you learn from your mistakes. Yes, the SAT platform is new, but they’ve been doing practice questions for medical students for over 15 years and have a dedicated faculty that fully understand the SAT exam. They’ve taken that experience and used it to create the SAT question bank. And you should ALWAYS do the College Board full-length practice exams since they are the authors/creators of the exam. Good luck!
Just wondering if you have personally used UWorld to prep for your SAT?
I’ve worked with lots of high school students over the years both in college admissions and exam preparation.
My D took practice tests and studied wrong answers with Khan Academy (only needed math score to come up). Like the other poster’s son she committed a few hours a day over the summer. The results were well worth it. Its not impossible but your time frame is pretty short. Another option that might help is seeking out some books on test taking strategies.
