Tisch

I am wondering if any one can comment on whether Tisch is "worth it". My daughter has her heart set on it, even though she knows its not likely she will get in. Any comments from anyone who actually studied there? How much difference will it make in the long run whether she goes there or, say, Point Park for a BFA?

Hi. It depends on what your dd wants. I will tell you that it is ballet/modern based. They are very selective and want a certain body type. Any of my dd friends that auditioned there will tell you that there is no warm friendly atmosphere. Its very expensive and in one of the most expensive cities. I dont know what your situation is but if your dd is at the top of the top she may get money but most will not get money for dance. I would go and visit. My dd always wanted to go Point Park. She did their summer intensive and loved the dance but there was nothing to do after dance. She did not audition there. I think the kids get this obsession with a school as their ultimate but the reality may be different. Go visit all schools. My dd is going to a school that I took her to kicking and screaming to last spring break. LOL. She is excited and loves it. Good Luck!

My daughter is a recent grad of Tisch dance and loved the program. It isn’t really all that body conscious as the other answer said. You don’t need a “ballet body”, but you do need to be in the best shape that your body can be in.
Many students were hired into companies right after their senior retro performance. You do get exposed to the best choerographers and being in NYC gives you great opportunity for networking.
Jobs are still few and if you are a male…you are pretty well set. As a general rule, only the top 10% of the best trained dancers get work and only 10% of them can make a living at it. There are Juilliard students without work. However, if you are a talented dancer and have a lot of drive, where you study doesn’t mean as much as what you put into it and how you pursue your career after graduation. Being in NYC will give her better connections. Perhaps she should also try for Marymount Manhattan and the Ailey/Fordham programs too.

Edit: There is also Eugene Lang for a BA at the New School.
