how many hours of practice a day?

How long can the recordings be? Is there any advantage of performing with an orchestra over pianist? Im thinking about 1st movement Of Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and one Paganini Caprice.. I think someone on this thread mentioned that colleges dont want music over 10 min.

A basic rule of thumb: Keep it as short as you need to make an impact. I sent in a single flute solo (Debussy - Syrinx, about 2 min), and two compositions - one for piano (which I recorded myself, so that killed two birds with one stone), and one put together on a sound module - total around 6 minutes.

Woah.....are you ALL piano and string musicians?

wow dreamsicle you are the only other clarinetist I have found on this board. I thought it was a very common instrument (obviously not as popular as piano/violin), but there have been more sax players in this thread than clarinetists...

Is this thread an anomaly or is clarinet at least semi-rare and will give me some boost if they like my ability? (I'm applying to Princeton next year if it matters) ::crosses fingers::

I'm a string player, but I knwo a few wind players who are applying. Piano and string instruments are just more common instruments applicants play.

The clarinet won't give you an edge - there are plenty of clarinet players. For some reason, just not on this board. Now, an instrument like the bassoon is another matter.

What about the trombone? Nah, probably not, unless you're bass trombone.....

what other people are sending visual art supplements this year? So far I know only of one other person besides myself

I was thinking of sending in art slides of some oil paintings but now i'm not so sure if they're good enough
just as an aside how many slides are we supposed to send?

Where do you record it? My home computer and mic isn't very good in terms of sound quality. It gives me a constant vibrato, hehe.

soccerfanatic- if you take band, ask your band teacher. Usually bands have some sort of recording equipment. You can also get it professionally done for money, but I would recommend someone to help you, even if it is your private lessons teacher.

do the admissions officers view the supplements differently depending on whether someone is going to major in music, minor in music, or just take private lessons while at the college?

Echoing irishdancer, how many slides is everyone sending? I was under the impression that I should only send like 1-3 slides, but it seems like most people are sending their whole portfolios. Are they majoring in art and would that make a difference?

Also, I heard somewhere that we could send in art on a CD-Rom in Jpeg form. Is that true?

i called admissions and a girl there said it was possible. that's what i sent in for EA. 11 jpeg pics. i'd love to see your art, hellogoodbye, or irishdancer's.... not everyday you run into super academic artists

Do you go to New World Ontolome?

i don't DHA, but almost did. i'm in an IB program at Coral Gables High instead. why do you ask?
are you from miami?

Yea, I go to DASH. I sent in my architecture portfolio as well as my fine art pieces. I think I sent around 35 pieces of art/architecture including details

wow, that's pretty awesome :) i considered going to DASH once. i knew some really nice people there.....she's already graduated for sure by now. perhaps she was a senior when we were freshmen. did you know of a lisa machado?
