To ALL New Freshman

I am a current student at UCF in my third year, and very knowledgeable about basically everything UCF related. Seriously, ANYTHING.

If you guys ever has specific questions, don't hesitate to ask me. I know it would have been very helpful to have someone who you could ask questions to especially getting started.

Also, utilize you O-Teamers... that is what they are there for. Even after orientations. They all have e-mail addresses

Just so you all know.

Hey Ryan,

Thanks a lot for your reply to my question about M&M- I'll be choosing that for my major! Really appreciate your help!

I was wondering if you could answer a question for both me and other incoming freshmen: What Gen-ed classes would you recommend or are the easiest (particularly in the cultural/historical sections)? Finally, what teachers would recommend for either the gen-ed classes or the science-based classes?

Thanks! :)
David

SPC 1600C Fundamentals of Oral Communication
SPC 1016 Fundamentals of Technical Presentation
COM 1000 Communication

Which one do you suggest?

PWGuerrilla - what is your major?

David,

A lot of gen-eds depend on your major, a lot of new students don't realize this and end up taking more gen-eds then they need because their major might have required a different history class or economics class, etc. But bc we are the same major, here is what I would recommend.

1) For speech, select SPC 1016 (tech presentation)... you need this one
2) for the history classes, you pick... no one particular is required... look for the easiest teacher... ratemyprofessor will be your best friend for that... i would recommend amh 2010 and 2020 and then take FIL 1001 as your third class from that section. (teachers for FIL - jesse wolfe... for amh classes - o'shea, macdonald, or michelle adams)
3) In the comp sci/stats class... choose cgs 1060C... super easy if you know how to turn on a computer (which I think you do).. any prof will do
4) I would choose POS 2041 over the economics classes... economics is uber hard and not worth your efforts... take POS 2041 this fall bc the easiest teacher alive is teaching it on monday nights i believe... her name is Manar Elkhaldi... trust me and take this! A for sure.
5) The science gen-eds, don't worry about... they will take care of themselves with the major we are in.

I'm undecided.

Economics, statistics, digital media, and maybe hospitality interest me.

hi jagman! thank you for taking our questions =)
I was wondering whether or not we are restricted to taking 4 courses per semester?
thanks

you can take up to 17 credit hours without an override.

17 hours equates to anywhere from 5-6 classes

I heard that freshman are better off taking only 12 or 13 credits for Fall semester. I am refering to "average" UCF students (not the Honors or highly motivated kids).

I took 15 hours my first semester bc my major recommended it.

I personally wouldn't recommend anyone taking more than 12 hours your first semester. You have clubs, IM sports, greek life, etc that most of you will get involved with and will simple not have the time management skills (yet) to handle all of that.

Can you give us a quick list of teachers that you've had good/bad experiences so we can take that into consideration when picking classes?

depends on the classes...

You guys need to just look at RateMyProfessors.com. It is what we all use to look up teachers because with the amount we have at UCF, it will be hard to know about everyone of them. The site has been 80-90% accurate on teachers and it will be very helpful in finding the right information.

I second the above...go to ratemyprofessor.com. My daughter went into orientation/registration armed with a list of "good" professors for each class that she may have wanted to take. It made decisions much easier.

RMP has been my best friend since day one in college. Use it often.

i didnt decide to go to ucf till about the day before the deadlin so i didnt get oncampus housing. do you think it will be harder for me to get involve in various activities if i live off campus?

Not at all. On-campus you have to deal with RA's planning activities that are usually not that fun anyway. I would look to join a club that you are interested in and look to play some intramural sports if you do like them. I would say that the only thing you might miss out on is that if you live in a community like Libra, it is easier to meet people, but you just need to make an effort to meet all of your neighbors and try to make friends in classes, sports, clubs, or whatever you are involved in.

Not at all.

You will have to go ON CAMPUS for class, and that is usually when these organizations meet.

You are perfectly fine. Look out during the first few weeks of class for stuff that might interest you. Especially Wednesday, that is the day EVERYONE and their mom's come out to.

Just wanted to bump!

Do you know anything about Towers parking? When the kids go to parking services for their hangtag can they request a spot or a specific floor of the garage? Is it done by senority?

I know this.

Towers spaces are given out first come first serve (not senority) online at parking.ucf.edu this Saturday (July 19th). I'm not sure how fast they run out though. You can't request a specific spot or floor.
