Hey all SAT Lit test takers!

I received a 750 on SAT critical reading, and consider myself pretty good at English. However, I am not particularly well read and am not someone who likes to spend his/her free time reading poems and classics. I have purchased the Barron's and Princeton Review prep books from Amazon, and plan to study around 2 hours a day. I will be happy with a 750 on this subject test.

Here are a few questions that I am hoping you guys can help me out on:

What is the best way to improve your school? Doing practice tests or reading more?

How hard, realistically, is the test itself?

How did YOU prepare for the test?

Any extra information/tips/advice would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thank you all in advance!

My kids were very strong in CR. They did get a Lit prep book, but they only studied some concepts on various forms of literature (like learning terminology for types of literature and certain literary tactics). Both scored very high with that strategy. Both were voracious readers, but not necessarily the classics. The Lit test can’t really test what you have read (not a fair test), so to me that seems like a sound strategy (focus on those components, not a specific work of literature).

I’d recommend being very familiar with the test concepts and do a bunch of practice tests. My D got the official College Board Lit book, read through all the concept/text sections, and took a few of the practice tests. Her score increased steadily on the practice tests and she ended up with a perfect score on the actual test, to her great surprise.

If you have taken any AP English multiple choice questions, you might have a better idea on what the SAT II Lit test is all about. I took Lit earlier this month (waiting for scores tomorrow along with US history and Bio E) and, despite Lit naturally being being my strongest, I felt as though the test was most difficult and that I performed relatively poor. That’s just me, though.

Thank you all for the great advice! I will read through the prep books, take some practice tests, and see how it goes.

I got a 730 in CR with loads of prep.
I got a 780 on Lit with zero prep. To a kid who’s favorite class is English and who analyzes lit stuff all the time, it’s a pretty manageable test!
