To any current GT students: tuition

Alright, the cats at the finaid office don't seem to be returning my emails so here's the question: What exactly do you have to pay TO THE SCHOOL. I was looking at the Cost of Attendance and there are categories like "books, and supplies" & "personal expenses." Surely these are not credited to my oscar account are they? Obviously tuition, housing, and mandatory fees are paid to the university...but are the others?

Ferst,

If I'm remembering correctly, the most significant fees that you will be paying are:
tuition fee,
housing fee,
student activity fee (that lets you use the CRC),
meal plan fee (that lets you use the dining hall),
some kind of health fee that lets you use the services offered by the GT Health Center.

Those are perhaps the most significant fees that you will be paying.

My invoice statement from Spring Semester.

Athletic
60.00

Health
121.00

Dorm
2,011.00

Meal Plan
1,405.00

Rec-Facility Fee
54.00

Student Activity
113.00

Technology Fee
100.00

Transportation
57.00

Out-of-State Tuition
7,171.00

Out-of-State Tuition
1,819.00

Why are there two out of state tuitions? Thanks.

I don't know and I never bothered to ask

weenie & biomed33,

$1819 was the in-state tuition rate. I suppose for book keeping purposes everyone attending Tech (in state or out of state), will be charged $1819, while those who are out of state will receive an additional tuition charge on top of that.

Oh! That makes sense. Thanks.

Doing some out-of-state calculations: 7,171.00 + 1,819.00 = 8990/semester; x 2 = $17,980/year.

Looking at UMichigan's OOS engineering tuition: $30,970/yr

wow. difference = $12,990/yr.

WS17, I know what you mean. We had some folks from California at a visit asking "why OOS tution was sooooo much". Then, when I got up and told them how much it would cost for ME to attend UC Berkeley or another UC (40K altogether), they just sat down quietly, haha.

true GT is cheaper than alot of places for OOS, but in state tuition would be sooooo much better, haha

Here are my fees for Fall '06

ATH Athletic $64.00

Rent - $2,926.00 (living in Apartment style)

HEA Health $127.00

Meal Plan $1,451.00

REC Rec-Facility Fee $54.00

SA Student Activity $113.00

TECH Technology Fee $100.00

TRAN Transportation $59.00

TUI Out-of-State Tuition $7,530.00

TUIS Out-of-State Tuition $1,910.00

5% tuition increase. I've seen a lot worse, esp. considering the current increasing general rate of inflation.

I have heard that it is possible to set up residency within the first year or two at a public school and then recieve the in-state tuition bill for the last 2 or 3 years. Can someone please shed some light on how easy/common this is to do, and if it is even possible?

Their is information on residency requirements on the GATECH website. I believe it said you need to be a resident of the state 12 months prior to registration (which is usually in February). I would think that would also mean the student is no longer a dependent of the parents home or health insurance policy. Still worth looking into though.

I don't owe the school any money :-)

In fact, I'll have 1500 in my checking by the 16th (more if I put my computer on COA).

It is generally impossible to establish in-state status after starting as an out of state student.

You have to show that you became a resident of the state for purposes other than to get in-state tuition. The official statement:

http://www.registrar.gatech.edu/students/residency.php

Does GT hold the tuition at a fixed amount for your 4 years, or are there tuition increases every year? (I'm mostly asking about OOS.)

Starting this year, tuition is fixed for four years for each incoming class of freshmen.

Thanks. UIUC also does this.

Ha ha.

At Connect with Tech, they said the fixed tuition program might not be offered next year.
