I didn’t dare post it. Are we allowed to discuss the article?
The pro-gun surely are simple minded people.
Let’s arm all the female students, they will be safe. I imagine they will also put in their law a requirement that the guys who commit the crime are not allowed to carry?
You can discuss political issues if the issues relate to education.
If students have the right to carry guns on campus, and I was a prospective college student, or a parent or a relative of a prospective student, I would like to know about this.
To the best of my understanding, the quote from John D. Foubert is right on the mark.
I was wondering about guys carrying guns too.
All girl schools are looking a lot more attractive.
Everything we know about sexual assault on campus says that most of the assaults, and most of the accusations that turn out to be untrue, involve alcohol and lots of it. Do we really want drunk women carrying guns on campus? Do we really want drunk men and drunk women wrestling for guns? This seems like a terrible idea. Even assuming arguendo that carrying guns deters stranger rape, acquaintance rape (party rape, date rape) is a different problem.
I think that arming people to deal with whatever issues arise is one of the worst ideas possible. Adding more guns is shown to increase the rate of crime, and I think that having guns will cause issues that would normally be settled calmly to escalate to violence. I’d rather colleges start holding more criminal trials and start using real investigation techniques rather than allow something that could lead to vigilante justice. Especially when we’re dealing with traumatizing events, you don’t know what someone who’s armed could do.
Seems like an ill-fated idea, if they ever implement it. Hopefully no college administrator ever takes this idea seriously. I’d rather there was a zero tolerance policy for alcohol on college campuses rather than do this. Shut down every frat, take away alcohol, do whatever you can. Just don’t arm college students…
Perhaps if students remove all their clothes except for their gunbelts, holsters, and bandoliers, that might cool down some of the sexual situations.
The “Teach men not to rape” think is so ridiculous it’s mind boggling. Rapists aren’t rapists because no one told them it was wrong.
By the same logic, do people think we could end theft and robbery by telling people that it’s wrong to rob and steal? Or murder by telling people it’s wrong to murder?
If our choices are teaching men not to rape or arming women, we might as well hang it up.
This is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard.
Why? It’s not as though the students at women’s colleges don’t have contact with men.
Maybe we should let women carry guns.
I can see a woman testifying in front of a tribunal.
"I was drunk. He was drunk. He didn’t say no. I would never kill him. It was the alcohol. I just got the gun. I don’t know how to shoot a gun. I would never have shot him in the stomach. I would have shot him in a slightly lower part of his body, if I wanted to shoot him.
The tribunal responds…
"We find the woman, Not Responsible. Witnesses say the couple were laughing and joking before they went into a room together. We have no proof of the actual motive. The gun wasn’t registered. We lost the bullet. The bullet is sitting in a warehouse. Somewhere. Maybe. We don’t have the paperwork. We threw the paperwork in the trash. We would have to test 400,000 bullets. We don’t have the money to do that.
Plus is is hard to believe the guy. He is not talking. He did not show up for the hearing.
The accused is Not Responsible. Please don’t sue us!"
“I have been proven innocent. I am innocent!”
If you allow guns on campus, fraternity guys will be shooting beer cans off each others’ heads as part of the hazing ritual.
Ridiculous idea. Like we don’t have enough issues with guns in our society. Also, if you read the first quote by Michele Fiore in it’s entirety, she seems a bit over zealous to say the least. A ****** to the head? Really? Think D and I will stick to our pepper spray.
The best thing about the article is the map depicting which states ban or allow guns on campuses. I think many be will be surprised by it.
I posted that map in another thread months back and yes, I was surprised as well.
University of Colorado allows guns on campus – even had a “gun dorm.” No one signed up.
