To current Yalies: where do you buy books?

Where do you usually buy books at New Haven (including textbook and other books you read for leisure)? Is there any particular store that you recommend?

Thank you.

I mean, I really only know of two bookstores in New Haven that students go to, and at least one of the two will have ordered books for each of your classes.

First there’s the Yale Bookstore on Broadway (which is run by Barnes & Noble), and then there’s Labyrinth Books on York Street (independent bookseller). Both typically offer some used copies of books for the most popular classes.

Then, if you want to bargain hunt, there are always Internet resources. Students at Yale can look for other students offering books they need for reduced prices at YaleStation (an online marketplace type thingy) and then of course there’s always your own Internet bargain hunting at places like half.com, Amazon, ebay, etc etc.

Then, finally, very often Bass Library has course books on reserve (because the Professors request them). There you have it!

India or China (online)

unless you have 1000 dollars to shell out each year

online. Try to find out the text books in advance (esp. for classes with one large/expensive text book, this is a good plan). Email the professor to ask what book/edition you’ll be using, then order it online in the summer or over winter break. You should be able to get it for significantly less than the bookstore.

You can do the same with classes that have lots of small books to read (english, history, anthropology, literature, humanities…), but it’s more complicated to buy so many books. Usually for these classes i either order the books on inter library loan (from any ivy league library… it’s very easy, and the copy in yale’s library will probably go fast to one of the other people in the class), or buy them from the yale bookstore or labyrinth. But they add up fast, and have almost no resale value.

Always on Amazon except in the rare instance the Yale Bookstore/Labyrinth has it for less.
