To-do’s after ED acceptance

My kid has been accepted to her early decision school. Wondering about what needs to be done now:

  1. Submit the acceptance form at the college.
  2. Pay the deposit. With the holidays etc, probably best to pay it myself and reimburse from 529 afterwards. Do those two actions need to be in the same calendar year for tax purposes?
  3. Tell other colleges where she has been accepted that she won’t be going there.
  4. Withdraw application from other colleges. Is there a deadline for this?
  5. Send midyear transcript to ED college in January.

Anything else I am missing?

Housing deposit?

Student may need to confirm mailing of mid year report.

She will be getting an information “letter” (e-mail or portal) that should have some of the upcoming charges for health insurance and other student fees.

Here are some other things to do:

Join the accepted FB pages for the student (and parent)
Start building a plan for required courses and majors
AP score reports
Pay the housing deposit
Relax!

To withdraw application or decline acceptance, some colleges make it easy by including it in the application portal. Others the student has to email. It’s interesting how long it takes some colleges to process the withdrawal email. Of course, there were holidays and this time is really busy for college admission offices. But my daughter is now circling back to colleges that never replied to her request to withdraw and making sure all are processed.

I noticed in #3 you say “Tell other colleges where she has been accepted that she won’t be going there.” My son just pulled his applications (with the exception of two places that he felt deserved more and sent an email). I’m wondering if he needs to do something different with schools he was already accepted to, other than just withdrawing the application.

There should be a way in the portal to decline the offer of admission.

This is thoughtful, but not necessary. Telling admissions once is enough, the onus is on them to process the withdrawal.

Same thing, just sometimes a different process (email or portal). Also some colleges wanted to know where my daughter was going.

  • Update Naviance, or whatever software your high school uses to track college acceptances, with college acceptance information. This increases the accuracy of the software for future students.

  • Book lodging for move-in and new student orientation. Dates for both can usually be found on the college’s academic calendar and/or housing website.

Does the college require #5? You may want to check. My child’s ED college only required the final transcript.

My daughter updated the status for schools she was accepted at and put in the ED one too. But she wasn’t sure about putting in a withdrawn application status.

Good point. You are correct. I had mid year transcript listed from the application portal when she submitted her application. But my daughter checked now and it only mentions final transcript.

It also doesn’t mention SAT/ACT official score report. She had self-reported when applying.
