To Duke or Not to Duke?

I can see how the logic could apply to a place like NYU but not Duke.

Duke and Dartmouth are equals, there's no reason to make something out of nothing. If you're lucky enough to choose between these two choose for fit. Its like arguing a Lexus is better than a BMW, but in reality they are exactly the same level just different.

Well slipper more like BMW and Benz really ;).

But no its not a no brainer. On my list I have Duke over Dartmouth for a variety of reasons due to the fact that Duke's academic programs suit me perfectly and I get a better vibe from them. I can easily see how it could be the opposite for someone else. Once you go above a certain level it all becomes a matter of personal taste.

I'll take the Benz!

On the Duke v. Dartmouth subject.. I would say that Duke has better math/science/engineering programs than Dartmouth.. however, Dartmouth definitely wins in languages!

It is a tough choice to make though..

hey, i've got the same problem, duke/ dartmouth. I want to major in biology, and i'm not really a sports person. I am, however, in LOVE with the duke website, and feel that that the resources available to duke undergrads (eg the research triange) just outstrip those available to dartmouth undergrads. I'm not sure which one i should go to :-~

^Duke!!! But don't choose Duke for the area lol. I live in the "research triangle," and it isn't marvelous (though it is definitely superior to New freakin Hampshire lol).
Choose Duke for the vibe, the people.

every place has a 'vibe' every place has the 'people'. the problem is, since i cant visit, i dont actually know what the vibe is, or what the people are like. :-(

i'm just a little worried dukes TOO athletics oriented. I mean i enjoy going to the occasional basketball game, but i wouldnt want my world to revolve around them. Plus i'm not that much of a party person.

^Lol Duke is too athletics oriented? Their football team sucks too much for that :)

haha but from what i've heard, they go to basketball games more often than the movies.

Lol. Actually most of my friends at Duke aren't that into basketball, but they are the scholarship winners and utter nerds :) They still agree that it's nice to have a sense of school spirit. And hey, Duke gets a lot of its national recognition and reputation through the attention garnered by its sports.

Man, Duke v. Dartmouth. It's gonna be a tough tough decision.

I've got Duke v JHU v Berkeley (Regents) v Penn

Advice? (Duke biased or not... :))

compare programs

think about how and where you want to spend your next 4 years.

Location Location Location. I don't know anything about Berkeley; however, we have been to your other choices. JHU and Penn are city schools, limited campus feel, IMO. Duke --well, I am biased. Duke's campus is one of the most beautiful that I have ever seen. Students are congenial, personable and have an incredible sense of school pride. Sons are planning to study biomedical engineering which, according to USNews, is second only to JHU.

Take us or Penn. The Regents scholarship is actually a really bad piece of advertising, in my opinion. When it was offered to me:

"It's a very special opportunity for you... we'll assign you a faculty advisor --"

"Wait, what? Most students don't get faculty advisors?"

"... well, no, I mean, our faculty is very busy and we have a very large student body. But, as I was saying, the Regents gives you preference in class selection, so that you can make sure to get into the classes you need to graduate in four years..."

"Is graduating, you know, on time... hard? And I can't get into the classes I want? Ever?"

"Oh, yes. At least, if you major in a science, or if you're premedical or something like that. The classes fill up quickly, which is why this scholarship is about more than the money."

Well, it is interesting how everyone's perspective is so different. I have been part of TIP Dukes' program for years. No question about academics but the schools reputation with the average Joe is because of the sports. Nothing else. Someone mention location, location, location. Exactly!! We are talking New England vs North Carolina ( the local people could not be more different ) and Durham.....sucks big time, town wise. I guess you really have to go visit, get a feeling for the whole thing and then decide.

Location as in city campus (Baltimore/Philadelphia) vs. suburban campus. Shrivats was looking for advise as to JHU, Penn, Duke & Berkeley.
If you are comparing Dartmouth to Duke -- well, lets see. Equally strong academics. Dartmouth - snow from October to March or April. If you love the cold -- Hanover is where you want to be.

JFITZ, I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE! Dartmouth vs. Duke. I got a likely from Dartmouth , and my parents want me to go there but I have 2 friends going to Duke and that's where they want me to go. So I'm indecisive =\ I don't know if the whole "Ivy" status should lure me in.

^Don't choose because of other people (unless those other people own the wallet).
