<p>Hey guys!
well, as the thread's name says, I have a question regarding my transcripts:</p>
<p>I am an international student, so I do not have to send transcripts from 9th grade on.
In Germany the collection of credits starts in grade 12, so previous grades do not influence the outcome of my Abitur (high school diploma)
I have sent an email with this question to Yale and they said that they want to know about me as much as possible
BUT
my 11th grade transcript looks horrible (and by that I do not mean B's)
I was going to lots of crap that year and I was about to move into a shelter as the situation at home seemed to be unbearable (it really was the serious type of things you usually do not want to talk about) :(</p>
<p>So the question is....should I send those transcripts in?
In comparison to my 12th grade score there obviously is lots of improvement but I am really unsure about it...I don't want to ruin my chances by raising any red flags
But I am also worried that I would do the same thing by not sending them in....</p>
<p>I really hope someone can help me out and offer sage advice</p>
<p>@sezon
I am thankful for you response, but I honestly feel offended…it has never been my intention to lie to the adcoms!
Would it have killed you to be a bit more respectful?</p>
<p>@sylviecerise
Thanks alot for the advice…I guess I’ll try that</p>
<p>Yup lying is a red flag. I spoke to ppl on the Brown Forum last year. This one guy was suspended from school for plaigarising. He was asking whether to put it on and I said he should and write a letter or slide it into his essay.
He is at Brown now.</p>
<p>I think you should slide it into your essay. It shall not hurt at all. Explain yourself</p>
<p>I think you should include it with a statement explaining your home circumstances.
Do you mind if I ask, are you SURE international students don’t have to include a transcript? Because I’m an international student too, but I didn’t see that anywhere… if you could let me know that would be great.
on the topic of your ‘bad’ yr11 reports, adcoms love to see improvements too, so i heard, so if your yr12 is stellar, it could look just as good anyway?
emotional, psychological and academic recovery and all that jazz~ in a good way, i mean.
thats what im relying on, anyway. =]</p>
<p>hey sora
the transcript thing is kinda weird for germans because we have 13 years of school and our high school in the sense of collecting credits (or grades that are going to influence your GPA)
so the if you had always D’s and started getting straight A’s in 12th grade…you’ll graduate with a perfect GPA</p>
<p>so I guess that’s why I can choose to either include or not include the transcripts from year 11</p>
<p>hi chocolate curl:
yup, we have 13 years of school too: kindergarten till year 12.
but its the same for us:
say we ABSOULTELY fail years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, but ACE year 12,
its your year 12 mark that will determine your uni admission: we’ll still get a great ATAR (overall rank in australia), no matter how badly we did in the years before.
because high school transcripts dont matter here, not that i know of anyway. it doesnt directly influence our uni admissions.</p>
<p>but regardless of that, im pretty sure that transcripts are still compulsory, all the websites of unis ive been on say that, even for internationals. but like i said before, adcoms are said to love improvements, and its better to be safe and hand everything in than possibly be rejected because you havent handed in all the requested forms, right?</p>
<p>goodluck! dyuu mind telling me which unis you’re applying to?</p>
<p>hey
kindergarten does not count as school in germany so its grade 1 to 13 and you go to kindergarten before </p>
<p>admission to university only exists partially in germany…there are some majors you can choose regardless of your GPA and we always apply in june or july after graduation here
and transcrips don’t matter here either :)</p>
<p>I guess I’ll only submit the transcripts from g11th grade on as I cannot afford getting them all translated
fortunately I was told they ultimately decide considering your predicted score on the diploma
but I’ll definetly tell them that I didn’t submit more transcripts because of the money</p>
<p>I will apply SCEA to Yale because I love the school so much
if i get rejected i will apply to williams & amherst college, smith college, dartmouth and maybe I’ll add colby and colgate to the list</p>
<p>which schools are you applying to? (`Whichever they are…I wish you the best of luck)</p>
<p>I know the question is weird…but does having a hook help internationals as well?</p>
<p>yeah, the translating cost, ey? i didnt think of that, but i think its reasonable not to hand them ALL in if you have to get them ALL officially translated and stuff.
my dad used to work as an interpreter/translator, so i know how expensive it is.
but yeah, i’m really relying on my final ‘diploma’ score and rank, lol.
and btw, HI5!! LOL. im applying yale too!! only not SCEA, because i wont have my final year 12 mark till mid-december, so its RD for me. but still.
yale, princeton, and new york-abu dhabi for me. maybe stanford and chicago, im still thinking about it, because even applying is expensive, ey?
besides, i’ll need a full ride, so applying to schools that are need blind are better… even though the competition will be crazier. sigh.
but about the hook: yupp, im quite sure that ‘hooks’ help everyone. i heard somewhere that internationals get compared with other students from their country, which makes sense. why? have you got a hook? lucky thinggg. i sortof have one, but i don’t know how im going to ‘work it’ in my application, lols.</p>
<p>Hey
yup…translations cost waaaaay too much money and I also have to get the financial aid stuff translated
I think I’ll use fee waivers as I am really really broke…even testing is expensive
unfortunately I spend more than half of the money I earn in order to support my parents who are both unemployed
and yaaaay I hope the both of us get in
NYU Abu Dhabi is really cool I actually wanted to apply too, but I don’t want to live that close to my aunt and my grandma
when does your school year end? mine just started so they have to predict my scores :(</p>
<p>I need a full ride too, so the need blind thing is great for the both of us I guess :)</p>
<p>may I ask what kind of hook you’ve got?
well…I am black and I’ll be a first generation college student but I guess those hooks are pretty common :)</p>
<p>maaan, such a colourful post!! i would insert a smiley face right here if i knew how. lol.
awww… sorry about the money thing… i would try waivers too, but im too lazy to fill out all the forms and check if internationals are eligible: we’re barred from so many things! well, not really, but i felt that way after i saw the collegeboard october sat deadline was extended for us people only. ==;;
AHAHHA, that’s really funny, about your relatives living in abu dhabi. maan, but at least you’d get home-made food whenever you wanted? =]
but yeah, i hope both of us get in!!!
join the internationals 2014 thread and the yale scea thread, they’ve got really supportive/good advice/knowlegeable people there. =]
but i end school in 6 school days. YUP. single digit, oh -six. six days.
BUUUUUT. my official final school leaving exams which are worth 50% of my final year 12 marks start in 27 days. TOT so yes. massive study-time for me soon. AND i have to sit my SAT2s and re-sit my SAT1.
but with the score thing, im getting my school report tmrw, so im including that, but i’m applying RD so i’ll send in my actual final scores, which should hopefully all be in the nineties, unlike my straight 80’s report. =[ but i go to a really competitve school here… but still. *sadness at sad report.
but YAYY for rich schools and need-blind-ness!! although i did hear they do peek at your financial aid request-thing. BENEFIT OF DOUBT, LETS BE POSITIVE. =]
hookwise? well, im an asian who’s lived in australia all her life… won a couple of writing awards… i won this global essay competition and my essay got published in a book of the collected essays, and i got to be the editor of the book. yeah. that’s my hook. but the rest of my application is humdrumm, so siggghhhhhhh.
ahwell.
but you sound heaps exotic, in a good way! black, first gen INTERNATIONAL from germany? quote one of my friend, COOLIES. =]</p>
<p>oh my god! I’m so sorry! i always abuse these poor smilies
yeah…the money thing kinda sucks but I can’t really change it…so why mope about it?
well, the good thing about my parents being unemployed is that i’ll only have to send in the certificate of the social welfare office
and about my relatives…they would expect ME to come over and cook and afterwards they would probably want me to get married or something…they are really traditional (i always wonder why my aunt doesn’t try to talk me into wearing a headscarf)
I wish you the best of luck for your leaving exams I am sure you’ll do great
is your school public? i have to admit to know jack about australien schools
I really hope the need blind schools actually are need blind - they are the only reasons why I got my hopes up again
may i ask which scores you got the first time you took the test? </p>
<p>I’m exotic? well, not really…I’m just the total opposite of what people expect when they hear germany (I’m actually from ethiopia and my dad is from saudi arabia)
Your hook is really great and impressive Congrats to all these great accomplishments
i would really loooove to read your essay it has got to be great</p>
<p>I hope you and your family are okay (the sand storm was in the news yesterday)
and btw…i was happy to see the long post :)</p>
<p>=] <— my ordinary smiley. =]
yeah… CARPE DIEM. MONEY AINT EVERYTHING.
LOL about the cooking thing: tradition can be a bummm, can’t it? i’d hate to have relatives like that, must be a pain~
but thank you for the luck!! even though im currently procrastinating: this site is perfect for doing that, lol.
yeah, my school’s public, but its selective: you gotta take an exam to get in: we’re ranked within top3 in the state =]
but eurgh, SATs… im quite ashamed of my first test score, i did dreadfully… cant remember exactly, mid 2100’s i think. i did better in my second, and MUST get +2350 on my third. hopefully. =]
EXACTLY. thats what i mean by exotic? how internationally/culturally cool is that? lol.
but the essay thing, it sounds a lot better than it is. eurgh. besides, the publisher-people made me pad it like CRAZY, with lots of description and stuff. really not my thing. i prefer minimalism in my writing. LESS IS MORE. =]
but yeah, that dust storm was HORRIBLE. not life-threatening or anything, for me at least, but eurgh. when i woke up the sky was RED. scary stuff. apparently some people thought it was the end of the world!! LOL. funny stuff~
im not sure how long this post is, but be happy anyway!! i MUST start working on my essays properly soon.</p>
<p>Hellooooo… Yeah you do have to send those transcripts, unfortunately. Mine isn’t good either! Argh! But yeah it was confirmed that it is essential to send them regardless. If you also write an extra note with an explanation (but don’t make it sound like you’re trying to get in on a sympathy vote) then I think that’ll be OK.</p>
<p>Good luck!</p>
<p>Whereabouts in Germany are you from? I went to Koln once and loved it!</p>
<p>heey you guys @sora
wow…I’m soo impressed I think that it is really good, that you go to such a great school really happy for you
I have no idea where my school is ranked as we don’t have such things we don’t have a class rank either…
I am sure that you’ll do great on your SATs who knows…mabe you’ll get a perfect score
and btw yay to cultural diversity
its good to hear that you didn’t get hurt and btw…aren’t there people who always believe that its the end of the world I can’t help it…it just is kinda funny
i totally agree with you less IS more
Unfortunately I feel like my writing sucks in english </p>
<p>how is your supplement coming along? </p>
<p>@ninja
i’m from munich Köln really is beautiful…but I like berlin better
but there is no place like munich while oktoberfest </p>
<p>actually you guys should have visited lots of tourists and lots of fun</p>
<p>thanks for the invitation
I’ll join the club…but now I gotta run…or I’ll be late for work</p>
<p>hi again chocolatecurl~ i just said hi like a minute ago in the internationals thread, but i’ll just reply to this one too.
err… actually, as an individual im just average at our school, lol: riding on the coattails of its reputation, pretty much ^^" ahwell.
pff, you dont need to go to a “ranked” school per se to be smart: i betcha you’re one of them DIY genius freaks, ey? if only i had that kind of motivation… sigh. maan… working and supporting your parents and all: *feeling kind of petty and immature comparitively, lol. ><" i’ll grow up soon!! hopefully.
but TQ for your vote of confidence: i MUST do well, so i SHALL do well. i heard somewhere that an essay is 1% thoughtful consideration, 99% desperation. hopefully the sa,e goes for the SAT =]
yeah, the whole apocalypse thing is really funny, ey? kinda like the millenium bug all over again. the media over here are gaga over it. eurgh, the media. i wrote a major work on the media, lol.
pff, and i doubt your writing sucks, seriously. people are always harder on themselves.
and my supplement? well, considering how my MAJOR exams are coming up in 26 days… i think i’ll start my supplement after they;re finished, which is in mid-november… gives me a month to work on them full-time. should be enough time. im hoping. desperately~ =]
and when you et back from work, hope it was good!!</p>
