To move off campus and commute or stay in dorms?

I’m considering moving back home for the spring semester of sophomore year and commuting to school (about 30 min give or take depending on traffic). Despite being a friendly person and in charge of a student club on campus I don’t feel like I’ve connected well with anyone on campus, haven’t really made any good friends at all this year. I’m a pre-health professions student so this is my last year at UMD anyways, I’m transferring to the professionals school in Baltimore next fall.

I’m in my first semester of my sophomore year and this is my third year living on campus in the dorms. My reason for considering commuting is that I go home so much on weekends now that I feel like paying for on campus housing and meal plan isn’t worth it. I don’t enjoy living on campus anymore and I am constantly looking forward to the next time I go home on weekends. I live in a single dorm this year (had a roommate last year and it was horrible) and I’m by myself pretty much all the time. I don’t mind being alone but sometimes I get lonely. I feel like if I’m not enjoying living on campus, then why do it? For the record, I don’t go out to parties anymore because I don’t have people to do that with, and I’m just not really into the party scene or anything like that.

Opinions on this? I have one semester left at UMD after this, is it worth it to give commuting a shot since I’m leaving UMD for good after next year? Or do I suck it up and live on campus for one more semester since it’s my last time at UMD?

Stay at home for a week or more this semester and make sure you can handle the commute and that you’re happier and can still manage all of your academic and club commitments. If it feels better then yeah, absolutely save your money for Baltimore. You’ve come this far though and with only one semester to go you don’t want to make a drastic change without knowing for sure that it will be a positive one.

I agree with @Otterma, if you have a good safe car, stay home for a week and try it. If it works out and is okay with your family, then commute. Then actually save that housing money for next year.

If you live that close, it seems kind of silly to live on campus in the first place. Commute for sure.

I think you need to move home and save the money. In your situstion, it does seem pointless to live on campus. Good luck to you.

I would say move back home and save a bit of money! That is always a good thing! With one semester left I think commuting will be easy enough. Living in the dorms is fun for a while but for some it gets old because there are a lot of distractions going on! With your situation I think it’d be worth a shot to just commute and see how it goes! Good luck to you

Agreed with the chorus of voices. Moving home and saving the money if you are unhappy seems like a good choice.
