To risque or not risque?

Probably a silly title but it covers my question. I am writing my personal statement in letter form but my teacher and a few of my counselors feel it might be risky. My personal statement is in essay form as well for comparison purposes but I REALLY DISLIKE THE ESSAY. I feel more attached and confident of my personal statement as a letter than the one I wrote as an essay. It is a letter to someone in my family who has had a significant meaning in my life. So far my teacher and counselors like the letter format best.
My question is, will it be in my favor if I send my personal statement in a letter format or essay format?
