^ Don’t you have a Socialist rally to attend?

Ssobick is correctly stating the facts, as usual. No reason to get insulting. The state cannot afford 10 flagship universities, which is why they only granted tuition hikes to three: UF, FSU and USF. UCF does have high admissions standards though, and will continue to improve.

I agree, UCF is on the rise. However, FSU is also making significant progress as well. The same can be said for USF.

S is at UF, several friends are at UCF and couple are at FSU. The kids at UCF are disappointed in the Orlando area, it is so geared to Disney and tourist. They wish for the college towns that are Tally and G’ville. They have come up several weekends to get it.

I also feel that G’ville and Tally watch out for our kids as a college town. Orlando is just too big.

I am sorry but I do not know my friend’s son’s stats (and she is not the type that would offer that info) but I will say that this particular boy was not a stellar high school student but found his niche in college. He is waiting still to here from FSU (much cheaper than Miami or NYU).
My husband and I are not from Florida originally. He is an MIT grad with two degrees and I have degrees from Boston U and U of Penn. I “get” the national college scene. My kids are going to Florida schools by choice (money, honestly, isn’t an issue for us).
I urge all of you to find the university that is the right fit for you and your families. If you thrive in college, you will get into the graduate school that you want.

UCF may be a lesser university compared to FSU now, but it will eventually overtake it within our lifetime. Perhaps in about 20 to 30 years. FSU just has no more room to grow, while UCF is constantly under construction. As they mentioned to the crowed when I visited the honors college, UCF stands for “Under Construction Forever.” I didn’t even apply to FSU, and now I’m considering either the UCF honors college or New College after getting rejected from UF. (Pending appeal.)

LOL. Great Republican remark fabi0lita.

It’s funny how people let their personal bias get in the way of facts. UCF is a regional/commuter school ranked in the lower 3rd tier, that is a fact. FSU is a national research university and a flagship institution in the state of Florida, that is also a fact.

UCF has been making strides lately, but so has every other university in the state. All those tall tales, about people getting rejected from UCF but accepted to FSU, are just flat out comical. People shouldn’t believe everything they hear.

Each student should go wherever he/she feels more comfortable. As in my case, where I decide to turn down an acceptance to UF because FSU felt like a better fit. You shouldn’t go to a school just because it has “higher” ranking. Still, that is not the point of this thread. The OP was merely pointing out why the thinks that FSU would be a better choice than UCF, and backing up that opinion with facts.

^ FSU MBA is right people.

Looking at the admit percentages and SAT ranges, I would say they’re roughly equal in selectivity. People should just choose the university that has the best programs for their major or which better caters to them. I believe UCF has a better honors program, so I may go there.

^ Stay classy. Your going to be a UF student now.

By the way congratulations on your acceptance.

The Common Data Sets show FSU is at least ten points ahead in average SAT in actual enrolled students.

2007-8 FTIC STATS
FSU: 1090/23 - 1270/28 SAT/ACT
UCF: 1070/23 - 1260/27

Better academics, tradition, sports, a historic flagship university, compact campus (where you can get away w/o a car) great graduate programs, law school, med school…Go 'Noles!

Having said this - if leaving south Florida is difficult for someone, then UCF would probably be a better choice. FSU is not a south Florida kind of university.

10 points. Gee, is that a difference at all? When two applications are in front of an admissions committee, and one has an SAT score 10 points higher than the other, are they all going:

“OMG! A full ten points higher! Amazing! Clearly the better student!1!!!”

Hahahahaha…no. Ten points is absolutely nothing. FSU is historic and currently a flagship. 95% of its high status in the state is because of the football program. (Of which they were found to be recently cheating. Go Canes/Gators!) Lets examine your reasons:

Better Academics- Established by a 10 point SAT score difference?

Tradition- Of what? Oh yeah, Football.

Sports- FOOTBALL

Flagship University- FOR FOOTBALL

Compact Campus- If this really mattered, UF would be among the likes of FIU and FAU

Graduate Programs- No complaint here, but we’re analyzing undergraduate programs.

Okay, wait..so since when you are not supposed to go to the same school for your graduate as undergrad? Cause I wasnt planning on leaving UF till they kicked me out…

Also, I dont believe FSU is anymore selective than UCF, UCF I believe is bigger (student wise) and harder to get into.

They also have pretty ridiculous stuff though. My friend got put in a summer program that treated her like she was mentally ■■■■■■■■ because she didnt have a high enough SAT score. They really love those SATs at UCF, all my friends who had to wait months and months to here from them all had okay scores but good grades and tons of exc.

They also seems to have no choice about the classes they take for gen eds and I think the professors arent required to have a doctorates degree like they are in most other universities. I heard that at least three years ago now so that may have changed.

Also, its in Orlando…if anything at least FSU would give that college atmosphere.

I am also biased because I’ve been bleeding orange and blue for life and couldnt of gone to FSU or UM and just hate UCF. So keep that in mind.

Don’t forget USF and New College as good alternatives to consider, too!

ok i am a freshman at UF…i think all of this needs to stop…one cannot say another university is better…you guys needs to look at it in the perspective of the chosen major of a student. FSU has some programs that are better than UF and UCF (music), UF has programs that are better than FSU and UCF (business, nursing, pharmacy), UCF has programs that are better than UCF and FSU (sciences, engineering)…it ALL just depends on what the student decides to do. Just because UF has a lower acceptance rate doesnt mean its any better than the other universities, just that they have to accept fewer applicants because they’ve already accepted way far too many more than they can accommodate because apparently they have been wrong about their yield rates in the past. i think this argument is stupid and you all should stop wasting your time and realize that you really cant compare any college unless a specific college is better than another college in every single department there is.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation in this thread. UCF will not pass or “overtake” FSU in this lifetime, so let’s put that ridiculous myth to rest. Also, the size of the student body has no correlation with the quality of education offered. At one point you start sacrificing quality in favor of quantity. BTW, is completely acceptable to attend the same college for undergrad and grad school.

To those going to UCF, you have nothing to be embarrassed about. UCF is a good regional college, it’s close to Disney World, has brand new facilities, and it’s trying to shed the “commuter school” image. In a few years, it may even catch up to USF in the rankings.

SSobick, do they teach grammar in your top private school?

a lot NOT alot
you’re NOT your

I don’t know where you guys are getting info about UCF catching up to FSU, and that its only behind because FSU is way older…well if you guys havent realized, just as UCF will continue to improve, what makes you think FSU won’t continue as well? it’s not like FSU is going to “stop” to let UCF “catch up” to them…they all will continue to improve…UCF will not be catching up to FSU anytime soon, if ever.

SSobick’s top private school should also offer a course in basic spelling.

Moral of the story: Look for the right fit.

Oboesmrtguy40 is right on - it is the major that matters most. Until you get into the premier state universities (UC-Berkeley, UVA) or privates, you will find considerable variation in quality across majors. Given the budget crisis in the state of Florida and the poor way in which the entire SUS has been managed, I wouldn’t count on any of the Florida universities making great strides in the near future.
