To those who feel that a top-tier college education is the only route to success

why would a name on a degree add anything to your potential to success. yea, it'll help you find your first job..... but that's about the extent of it. the people who attend top 25 univ. are the type of people who would succeed no matter what anyways. that's probably why their are so many successful grads of those schools.

It doesn't matter what undergraduate institution you attend as long as you challenge yourself there and get good grades. My dad went to CU- Boulder, which is not considered a "great" university, but he was still able to get an MBA from Northwestern. People shouldn't put so much stress on themselves when they do not get into the top colleges.

AGRICULTURE... lol..

Top tier level schools don't really matter too much. It all depends on the field you're interested in. My history teacher was a Columbia graduate, and he's making little money.

Cheney flunked out of Yale by "choice." He was anti-Ivy league cliques and was boycotting classes there.

I have a hard time believing about about a future Fortune 500 CEO and Republican Vice President.

Marines, I believe you may be mistaken. I have read that Cheney got into Yale due to the influence of a family friend who thought he showed promise. He flunked out. The family friend intervened, and got Yale to give him a second chance. Cheney flunked out again. That's when he returned - at Yale's choice, not Cheney's - to Wyoming.

Carolyn, Ms. Rice never attended Staford. She is the product of second rate universities. Even if she wanted to attend a top university, according to people I know at Stanford, she does not have the intellectual capacity to make it at that level. And given the content of her interviews/speeches, I must agree with that analysis.>>

ALexandre, After teaching at Stanford for many years, Stanford chose Ms. Rice as its PROVOST. As provost she was in charge of Stanford's budget and directed all academic programs. Obviously, someone at Stanford had a high enough impression of her intellectual capacity to entrust her with that position...But then, perhaps you think that Stanford is a second-rate university too. ;)

In any case, I don't always agree with her politics but let's face it: She's the first Female African-American Secretary of State. Pretty good for someone who started off at the University of Denver, which is what this thread is about.

<a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/nsc/ricebio.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.whitehouse.gov/nsc/ricebio.html</a></p>

Carolyn, I know several people who have woroked above, alongside and below Ms Rice. Most of them do not know each other. The unanimous opinion of the collective is that she is not that bright and a really malicious person. I do not know her, nor her politics, nor do I care about them since they do not impact me personally. But the overwhelming evidence I have heard indiacte that she is really not that accomplished, and I will leave it at that. Politics and religion are really not topics of discussions I like to get into, so I appologize for my earlier comments.

While I am loathe to equate financial well being with success, this thread reminds me of the book, "The Millionaire Next Door." If anyone else remembers that book, the authors studied the attributes of the wealthy and came up with some very interesting conclusions. Two such conclusions which are applicable to this thread are that: 1) the wealthy individuals they studied tended to be products of state-supported colleges and universities -- not the private, elite, ivy league-type institutions; and 2) that the wealthy tend to be entrepreneurs who run non-sexy businesses like road paving companies and roofing businesses.

Hayden, with regard to Cheney, I believe that you are correct. In fact, I remember a very funny bit that Calvin Trillin (a Yale grad) did concerning Cheney and Yale. Trillin indicated that he kind of liked Cheney because he was the only example he could think of who academically did worse at Yale than he did. Second, Cheney proved that you could flunk out of Yale more than one time.

It's amazing how much people can rate others based on what elite universities they were admitted to...

Condy Rice is extremely intellectually capable. I definitely don't consider myself "right-wing" or republican either.

I don't think she got her PhD from Stanford though. I thought she went to the University of Denver at the age of 15 and then got her masters at Notre Dame. Notre Dame? A second rate school? I think not... She did teach at Stanford though, and on the news a few days ago, I saw something about her being "provost," although i'm not exactly familiar with that term.

Alexandre-if you could give us more reason for why she is unintelligent, that would be great, but just saying that "you know people" that work with her, etc. is not sufficient. Dr. Rice is not only a survivor of racial suppression, but a former child prodigy and PROVOST at Stanford!

Dr. Rice has been on the Stanford faculty since 1981 and has won two of the highest teaching honors -- the 1984 Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 1993 School of Humanities and Sciences Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Alexandre, Could it be that some of your "friends at Stanford" do not like the fact that Dr. Rice is a women and african-american? Working in the U.S. for many years, I have often encountered people who thought that women and african-americans (as well as other minorities) were "uppity" "malicious" or "second rate" in spite of their accomplishments and achievements. Actually, I have found that it is specifically BECAUSE of their accomplishments that some tend to label successful minorities and women this way. Unfortunately, that attitude is still quite wide-spread when women in general, and women of color in particular, achieve a certain level of success. Finally, I'm the same age as Dr. Rice and I speak from experience when I say that at the time Dr. Rice was applying to colleges, "elite" schools were not as open to women or minorities as they are today.

Again, I don't necessarily agree with Dr. Rice's political viewpoint, but her achievements are quite remarkable given her race, gender and age.

I second all that Carolyn says about Dr. Rice. Moreover, I don't think she's any more of an idiot than her boss is.

"Carolyn, Ms. Rice never attended Staford. She is the product of second rate universities. Even if she wanted to attend a top university, according to people I know at Stanford, she does not have the intellectual capacity to make it at that level. And given the content of her interviews/speeches, I must agree with that analysis."

You are sadly mistaken. She graduated HS at the age of 15, and went to a Graduated from a fine University at the age of 19. Sure she didn't attend one of the top 10 schools, but you must remember during that time period those schools never would have allowed a 15 year old African American Woman to attend there. I know people at Stanford too and they tell me she very respected there. You are the only looking unintelligent here not Doctor Rice.

Condoleezza Rice is a prime example of how intelligence is not the most important trait for a human being. Sure, she may have graduated from high school at age 15 and is smarter than anybody in these forums, but there she goes knowingly lying about WMDs, and doing nothing to fix it.

I'm happy with my top-tier education :)

KK - There's nothing wrong with a top-tier education.
