Greetings, everyone. I am a freshman attending a college within the top 30 liberal arts colleges (according to USNews), yet I feel like transferring to a national university. My interests lie in engineering, mathematics, and sciences. I feel my school is lacking in these fields.

Due to taking easy classes which fulfill general education requirements (Music, Anthropology, Calculus 1, and a freshman Seminar in Entrepreneurship), I have a projected GPA of 4.0 this semester. Unfortunately, my high school GPA is around a 3.0. My superscored SAT scores are 640 in CR, 650 in Writing, and 700 in Math.

So, what are my chances of getting into a top 30 national university? I have no intention of transferring otherwise, sadly. I am thinking about Emory, Rice, Northwestern, and Washington University. If I really don't have a chance into getting into these schools, then just be honest with me.

Keep your GPA above 3.7 and take several demanding classes like science (Physics/chemistry) cal II next semester. I believe you have chance.

Thank you for your advice. I plan on taking Astrophysics, Calculus 2, Microeconomics, and another required Seminar course.

Yes, an upward trend from high school to college is a good thing. But they also consider the rigor of your course load, which is why taking tougher classes will be even better. However, they will not see your spring grades until after hearing a decision, but some schools ask for a current average and expect you to do as well at the end of the semester.

I see.

What would you (or anyone else here) say about retaking the SAT? I only tried twice last year, but I don’t think I can do much better than last time.

Hey I think you have a pretty good chance with emory at least.I just got accepted as a transfer with a 3.4 GPA. I took a lot of harder 300 level classes as a freshman because i was trying to figure out what i wanted to major in so I got a lot of B’s. I talked about that in my essay. I’m also really involved on campus in SGA, hall council, international club and lots of other things, Emory pays a lot of attention to leadership positions so just get involved I hope it works out for you!

I was advised by my academic advisor (redundancy ahoy) to keep my grades as high as possible by taking general education requirement courses.

I have other reasons for transferring as well. My University’s social atmosphere is best described as a bubble. Most students come from privileged economic backgrounds, while the racial minority, composed of international students, forms their own separate community. I fit into neither of these social clusters and don’t really have many friends. The people I want to be friends with don’t want to be my friend. Greek life is the center of all social activities, but I refuse to get drunk and party for the sole purpose of fitting in. The clubs on campus are few; most have less than 10 members. School spirit is very low.

Maybe someone else can smack some reality into me. Tell me the schools I am applying to may have even worse social scenes…
