You can't just do a standard format, I don't think. Unlike in submission to journals, the people reading you papers will not be reviewers who volunteered because your paper is close to their expertise. You need to make it clear what you're doing and the background. And erasonnin isn't completely wrong. Yes, you are chosen based on your region, but the VP of Siemens Foundation said there have been years when there weren't good enough people from some region so they flew ppl across from other regions.

yeah, I had a lot of plenary data in big, colorful graphs...

mine was 19 pages with 1 page of references.. had to cut out stuff from the report and make figures smaller so that all of the references would fit :p

if there was ONE line in your paper that wasn't double spaced but the rest of it was, will there be any penalty?

haha I don't think so...

phew...

I thought they were going to disqualify it

erosannin: well i guess you have the experience so ill trust what you have said.. anyways good luck to you and to everyone else.. sounds like there is a lot of competition!

My project turned out awful! Anyone can read it in like 5 mins and get everything...I also made a few mistakes (left out floor function symbols on one equation)....oh, well....it was worth a try

"Anyone can read it in like 5 mins and get everything"

thats good! i bet some of the judges will get confused about the complex ones and rate it poorer for clarity. and don't give up hope.. everyone has a few mistakes.. i found a couple mistakes in a paper that was published. all it takes is one judge to make you.

True, the competition is going to be hot, but keep in mind:

Around 300 of the approximately 1000 entries become semifinalists..

We are notified of this before Early Applications are due..

so if you're project is at least somewhat novel and you write well, quite a few of y'all will be getting a free backpack and a good HOOK into you're first-choice schools ....

this will be my last post for awhile .... good luck, and I'll be back for STS! <snore></snore>

Quick question: I know the abstract doesn't count in the 20-page limit (not that I was near the limit at 16 pages), but I stuck a page number on that anyway (so the research report started on page 2). That won't disqualify me, will it?

no, you wont get disqualified.

u get a free backpack? nice, but cash would be nicer. they should stop giving money to schools(who didnt help me on my project) and spread it around to the semifinalists.

Oh oh...

Um, my abstract doesn't have the title of my project. I thought that that would be on the title page... all the research reports I had read didn't have the title on the abstract page.

Am I finished of? Will I be disqualified? Do I have a shot at semi-finalist at all? This really sucks.

:(

anyone? So today at 5:00 PM, I'm guessing we are allowed to discuss our projects with others?

sagar, you should be fine. I too found that the abstracts of the research reports I read didn't have the title. My title only appears on the title page. Besides, if Siemens wanted the title on the abstract, they would have explicitly stated it in their instructions.

will the colleges know if you get regional or national finalist after EA apps are submitted?

Regional finalist, yes, national finalist, no (assuming EA/ED deadline is Nov. 1).

when's the last day u can send updates to ur EA/ED school. (the deadline for my school is Nov 1 and results will come out around Dec 15th) Cuz for people in the Western region, they will find out about being Regional Winner by Nov 7th.

still, cant it affect college decisions? For intel, they send a list of all semifinalists to all colleges and it still helps even tho the apps were already due
