To Westinghouse participants

if you send your app before 21st, how do you inform colleges? send them a printout of the site or something? if you call them, how can you be sure they write it in your files?

I guess just notify the college in writing.

Can't wait till the 21st!

I think semi finalists may receive more than just a backpack- my friend who was a semi finalist two years ago got a palm-pilot and a bunch of other tech goodies.

Sagar, I guess someone else already responded, but your title page is never separated from the rest of the paper. After your project title is coordinated with your name and confirmation number, all sensitive information (name, gender, location) is blacked out, but judges will see the exact same title page you printed (so the title is there). No worries.

yep, last yr they got ipods. But the Westinghouse director spoke to us and I dont think semis are getting something as high tech this year.

last year they got ipods?! what the heck?! I was a regional finalist and the best I got was a camera!

really
wait, dont you get 1000 dollars if you're a regional finalist

Yeah. So much TIME!!!! It's crazy. I'm really nervous, since if I get to semi's, its like a dream come through.

When I first started my project, I wanted to do it just for the interest of how it worked, etc. This mentality held from about January to August. Once I got into the hardcore paper writing, I felt like I really really want to win. All the other kids from my school did their projects at uni's like DUKE and UNCCH, whereas mine was done at home. I also don't have the most convincing results, and doing computer science, which according to everyone is inherently much harder to win with.

I did hear that getting to Semi's with team is moderately easier than with Individual...

Yeah we got $1000 scholarship, but ipods are still mighty good....

Small chances for semis for me I think :(

"I did hear that getting to Semi's with team is moderately easier than with Individual"

I think so too, but I don't have evidence. Also, are you guys sure there are more team projects than individual projects? It makes more sense that there would be more individuals. Also, a lot of the people on CC have individual projects.

I don't think they know if its a team or individual project when reviewing for semifinalists (I'm not sure about that one)

I am sure, though, that there are alot LESS team entries than individual entries. Also, think about it..individual entries are all by seniors, meaning that many have worked on their research for more than one year and their papers have been read over many times. Teams, however, include many underclassmen who probably just began their research. Since they are judged seperately, being in a team is a BIG advantage for doing well in Siemens.

jcr182 - They have to know if it was a team or individual project. First of all, half of them might have something like "the teamleader conducted an analysis of ..." which gives it away.

Yeah, almost every single senior applying from my school(10-12) is doing individual, with me and my friend as a team.

Are we allowed to share our paper with others now?

Why wouldn't we be allowed to share our papers at any point?

then why did people say on the other post that there are more team groups?

For those that were involved in Westinghouse for a year or more, shed some light on the process and competiton! How hard is it exactly to get semifinalist status? Have you guys known of projects with great ideas and writing that have been denied semifinalist standings?

hey, has anyone else had their research published?
Weeee! Europe trip to present in copehagen in two weeks!

Not yet since I thought you couldn't publish or have been published if you submit to Siemens but while registering I saw that wasn't true. Does anyone know if that holds for Intel STS too?

there are no constraints that I know of, save that you need to be the sole author of the intel paper. (Potential copyright issues not withstanding)

How hard is it for semifinalist if your work is a work in progress? Like I did a big huge procedure on AI stuff, but basically, we are in the process of getting data(my mentor mentioned that we are getting super computer accounts on mentor form he says to me <crossing fingers="">).</crossing>

Does anyone know if the intel paper has the same restrictions on not including acknowledgements and stuff within the document?
