To Westinghouse participants

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I don't know, everytime I hear about someone elses project, I'm like... darn... there's another one to compete with.

Does anyone know the proportionality of the entries? Like is number of projects from New York > South region, etc? Do they always take 50 semi's per region?

is it Eastern Standard Time?

It's Eastern Daylight Time.

I live in Durham NC. Does that mean I get it at 4pm or 5pm?

Semis are independent of area.

they just post a list on the website? Do they contact your school

My research teacher is quite adament about the fact that semis are chosen according to region, and that each region have a fixed number of semifinalists. Even though I could find no such info on the competition's website, he claims he verified this from one of the administrators of the competition.

Check "Competition Process."

It says that judges don't know the location, name, or sex of the paper they're reading. That makes me assume that semis are judges independent of all that.

Apparently not. Due to the conflicting info I decided to browse the CB's site on Siemens more. I found this in the FAQs.

"General Facts and Information
How many projects are received each year?
We anticipate receiving approximately 1,000 projects from individuals and teams.

How many Semifinalists are chosen?
From all the projects submitted, up to 300 outstanding projects (a maximum of 50 in each of the six College Board geographic regions) are selected as Semifinalists."

Oh haha thanks. That sucks for people in the east coast, or that have texas or california in their region. The other 3 regions are awesome though.

counting the semifinalists alone from california last year, there are 37, which leaves ~ 13 from the other states.

are east coast people... smarter? no we're not...
there are fewer people in the northeast, aren't there?

Most states that are EST are EDT during daylight savings time.

There's still a four hour spread about the US:

In LA, if it's 1 PM, then in Denver it's 2 PM, in Houston it's 3 PM, and in New York it's 4 PM.

14 hours and 20 minutes...

860 minutes...

51600 seconds...

Anyone else pulling an all-nighter tonight?

Haha- just kidding. Good luck tomorrow- everyone get a good night's rest.

i'm definitely pulling an all nighter tonight...cuz i have a ****load of hw for 2morrow

6 hours 15 minutes...

3 hrs and 10 min.

Semis are up at 1 PM EST. Good luck to everyone else. I made it! Now for another 10 excruciating days of waiting. Shouts to everyone else in S. Florida, stay dry. I'm putting up shutters after school (for the 4th time in 3 months).

Congrats everybody who made semifinalist. I didn't make it... :(, but that's ok, because I can always try again for next year.

Surprisingly, I am not that dissappointed right now. I guess it does suck that a years worth of hard work will go unnoticed, but I think that I have gained an experience that is truly benefactory.

Right now, the only reason I am ****ed is because I am not sure about Artificial Intelligence research anymore. It is an interesting field, but I just think that it doesn't give results in the timeframe I have.

Once again, my best wishes for all who made semifinalist!

yep... I didn't make it either... but congrats to those who did

yeah. everyone here is going to go on to do great things.
