hey people, do you know how big a role TOEFL scores play in the Mount HOlyoke admissions process? a friend of mine from China (where they don't offer the SATs) is taking her TOEFL test in December and she's wondering how seriously TOEFL scores are taken at MHC? (I don't know since I only submitted the SAT scores) SHe's applying to other high selective LACs as well. Any idea would be appreciated! Thanks!

So far as I know, Toefl is just a language test, you just have to pass the line, it won't have much use to get a top score, but it might be a drawback if your score is too low.

TOEFL is used to assess your English proficiency. If you're nowhere near proficient, it makes the school doubt you'd be able to do well there, because they assume that it'll make it that much harder for you to understand what you're learning (since what you're learning is in English).

With that said, I suggest that all international students put a lot of emphasis on the TOEFL. I had a friend who was an international student in high school, and the TOEFL was the "make it or break it" test for her. She got into Carleton, but only as a spring admit, because her score was good, but not great. I don't mean to intimidate you, but study hard!
