so i just found out i'll need my tonsils removed before school starts, and i'm glad because hopefully i won't be constantly sick any more, but i'm definitely afraid of surgery (especially the anesthesia) and i'm p.issed that i'll have to miss my last week or two of work solely to eat popsicles and feel sorry for myself--that's several hundred dollars down the drain!

anyone had an "adult tonsillectomy" and/or could tell me just how miserable it is?

i had my tonsils out when i was seven (along with some other surgery at the same time). I don't remember it that well except that my throat was a little sore.
I did have a tube put in my ear a few years ago though, and the scariest part was the IV. But I am really scared of needles, and I asked the nurse to do it when i was under anesthesia, so she did :) Seriously, if anything specific bothers you, let the people know who are taking care of you and they will do their best to make you more comfortable!

anesthesia isn't so bad. i had it when my wizdom teeth were taken out. aside from being out of comission for a few weeks there really isn't anything too horrible about the surgery.

I'm sure that varies from person to person. Some people bounce back more quickly than others no matter what your age (like wisdom teeth- some of my friends are in school the next day and some are out the entire week). Have you had any surgeries before?

nah, i've never really had any other surgeries beside having my adenoids removed/tubes put in my ears when i was like 2, which is probably why i'm kind of anxious..

and, speaking of my boyfriend, he should be home in a week :)
and yes, he would get EXTREMELY ANGRY if he saw that i was laughing at someone else's jokes..he's pretty much a psycho like that. (he did get slightly miffed when he saw pictures of me from a party shamelessly flirting with the bartender..but i suppose that's slightly legitimate haha..plus i was just trying to get underaged drinks).

andd he can deal..i have little to no sympathy as he's the one that's been away for two months, not me. he has an obligation to make it up to me..one that will fortunately be unaffected by my minor surgery ;)

My 18 year D just had her tonsils out last month because of recently diagnosed sleep apnea. She had lots of good drugs to take afterwards, because she really didn't feel like herself for a good 10 days--not to scare you, but to prepare you. Her dr said it would be 10 to 14 days, and he was right on the money. She took a form of percocet for a few days and then hydrocodone for a few; she mostly slept and when she was up, she drank water and apple juice, ate ice pops and smooth yogurt and smooth ice cream.

She also insisted that the dr bring her tonsils to the recovery room so she could see them! Because he knew she wouldn't remember what they looked like (still coming out of anesthesia) we brought a camera and took a picture of the little guys.

My sister (29) just had hers out Tuesday. She has watched Sportscenter more this week than most people would care to ever. She took two weeks off from work. I spent the day up there yesterday and she wrote that she was in a lot of pain and that yesterday was a hard day. She used a dry-erase board and her Blackberry to communicate. Oh, and a little bit of sign language which I knew none of ;)

i thank the Lord that i am blessed with perfect health, perfect teeth, perfect body and brain, and the strongest bones known to mankind because ive never been to the hospital unless i was shadowing someone

I had my tonsils out last summer. It wasn't fun for 2 weeks but it was definitely worth it in the long run. I used to get sick at least once every month or two (for several years). Since the surgery, I haven't been sick once!
My one suggestion is that you stay ahead of the times when you are supposed to take the pain medication. I made the mistake of letting it wear off, and then it hurt quite a bit to swallow the pills later.
Good luck- you'll be fine!
