I hate when colleges put my name in the damn subject line.

“Maya, experience the advantages Ursinus College offers”
“Okay, Maya, you’ve impressed us …” - DePauw
“Baylor wants to hear from you, Maya …”
“Maya, you caught our attention …” - VMI
“Maya, it’s not too late to Experience Mills!” Yes it is.
“Still interested in you, Maya” - Carson-Newman College

One way to not get this stuff is to have your birth date wrong. When I was a junior in HS, my mom mentioned in March or so that no college stuff was coming. She couldn’t understand why because my SATs were very good and my older sib had gotten a lot of stuff junior/senior year. So my mom actually called the Collegeboard and had someone look up my information. Turns out they had me down as being born in 1900. They knew that had to be a mistake and the person my mom spoke to said they are not allowed to give out any information to colleges for anyone under 13 or 14 years.

Does anyone know what information all these colleges get about the students, or is all the mail sent randomly to everyone? Do they get students’ scores on the PSAT? Or their interests? I noticed a difference in the type of schools one of my sons heard from than my other son did a couple of years ago.

Oh I know! Williams and Duke will not leave me alone! I know their good schools but it’s not like the emails and letters mean anything, it’s just a smack in the face.

You are aware that no colleges (at least any that I’ve ever heard of) have a “Pre-Medical program”, right? The pre-med ‘‘major’’, which is what I presume you mean by “program”, is just some bio, chem, english and calc classes.

I don’t like how top schools give false hope to kids through mail. This kid I know was bragging on his FB status about how he got mail from Stanford, which is annoying in and of itself. But, I know this kid and he gets straight C’s (and struggles to get these, I might add) in non-advanced courses, and got like a 140 PSAT. Basically, he’s not getting into Stanford. And yet they still make him think they’re interested in him, which will make him crushed if he ends up applying under this false assumption.

I’d give K-State the edge for engineering, but someone with a winning personality like you could probably go far anywhere. Who wouldn’t want to work with someone like you?

I am going to weigh all the college mail I have received since sophomore year and then shred and/or burn it after graduation.

I agree. One of the first pieces of college mail I got came courtesy of Harvard. They sent me a full, 20+ page application. It made me actually think that they wanted me to apply, and that I would have a good shot at getting in if I did. I was really excited.

Now I know better than to believe anything like that about college mail, but it upsets me to think how many kids with even less of a shot at Harvard were tricked into applying, and summarily rejected.

I’m dead set on going to Purdue. I came to this conclusion over the summer, and I used to love college mail until I chose a college. St. John’s in NY is my college stalker. I get stuff from them all the time. St. Mary’s of the Woods College has sent me like… five free applications, and I have thrown all of them in the garbage.

Schools need to get the hint when I don’t send in the first… three? free apps.
