Hey CC,

I just moved to a new city, and this guy has offered me a job tutoring.

I'm not sure whether I should take it, since this is like a new city, and there are other things I'd like to do also.

I'd be taking 3 APs: (sophomore)
Physics (school has regular only), and self studying topics for the AP
Calculus AB/BC - 1 semester each
AP Chem through ChemAdvantage and possibly studying for the olympiad-I heard that this course takes ~2 hours a day..

My english/ SS classes are normal, although I go to a sort of selective school so I don't know the level of the classes.

I also want to do research (biomedical) with a Prof, and I'll be meeting with a few this week..the prof I worked with in my old city said research is a solid time commitment and it requires a lot of effort (reading papers, coming in and setting up experiments).

This tutoring job would be from 5:00 to 8:30 on a Monday. Although it's only 3 1/2 hours a week, it's during a time when I'd be studying, working in the lab, and eating dinner.

The benefits are that I'd be able to refresh my concepts in math and I do enjoy teaching.

What would you do if you were me?

Thanks! :)

No i don’t think it’s too much!!! keep it up!!!

Why don’t you just try it for a week or two and see what happens? If it’s too much then just tell your student you can’t do it anymore.

Thanks for the responses!

It’s not a one-on-one tutoring thing, it’s for a center (Kumon). I did that program when I was younger and it was sort of helpful but after a while I got sick of it (I was on the 2nd level of Calc when I quit).

I know that the ‘tutors’ or ‘assistant instructors’ really usually grade papers and help people occasionally, so it’s not a terribly demanding job.

@Dramamine, I would do that except I’d feel awkward saying yes and then saying after a few days that it’s too much and I can’t do it anymore. :/

I work at Kumon, and I"ll be entering my junior year. I also worked there last year, and I didn’t have too much of a trouble managing my time. One of my main concerns with Kumon is the pay…stupid minimum wage, lol. That being said, only do it if you like it. Sometimes I get annoyed by the fact that the owner of my center does no work while the other assistants and I have to deal with screaming children, but oh well! It teaches you patience? You should give it a try. Perhaps you’ll enjoy it.
Personally, I would jump at the opportunity of having a chance to do research… how do you people land these opportunities? =_= Any tips? Of course when I try e-mailing professors at local universities, I get no responses… That’s my luck, I guess.

^hmm, I think maybe I’ll give it a go.
If you want any tips, just PM me! I’d be happy to help-after all, it’s CC that got me started :)
