Too much?

How many college applications are too much? And if I plan on applying to a ridiculous amount of colleges, what are the negatives aspects of that plan other than I won't be able to spend too much time on each application?

Other than spreading yourself thin? Application fees. And if most aren’t on the common app, asking teachers for recommendations could turn into an ordeal.

What about the colleges themselves? will they be able to look at how many I’m applying to and then feel negatively towards me for it?

Nope .

Don’t forget, sending SAT/ACT scores also have a fee.

“Too” many must be reviewed in the difficulty of the application. There is a thread for E-Z apps, many of which do not require an essay. Some programs, such as the honors colleges, within a school require additional essays on top of the application.

IMO 10 apps are a good standard for those who have to shop FA packages are for those who wish to apply to tippy top schools with very low acceptance rates.

More than 12 can create a logistically nightmare to follow up and verify all transcripts/test scores/recs were received.

The recommendations should NOT be a problem IF you tell the individual in advance that you will be applying to an excessive number of schools. You can ask the person to type a recommendation and save it electronically so that it may copy/pasted.
