I'm a junior and will be starting my applications soon. I plan on applying to a few ivies and other top schools. I'm thinking about writing my essay about my experiences with drug addiction and rehab. I no longer have problems with drugs, and I feel that I could use the experience to show my personal development and set myself apart from other applicants. Will colleges hold it against me that I had this experience, or will they agree that it has helped to make me a stronger person?

well consider that other applicants will write about the same thing. Yes, it is risky but not THAT original. I personally wouldn't because all it takes is one conservative ad com. If you are really comfortable and feel that it represents you well, then go for it. If not, then write something else. You have months.

i actually have the option of writing the same thing. though i never went to rehab a serious intervention went down. i decided it was too risky and while it would show how i've truely grown, a great essay is not worth some ******* deciding im not good enough for their college just because ive done drugs.
