Took Calc BC in 10th Grade, Now Want to take Calc AB

It doesn’t look like she planned very well ahead. If she took all these AP classes already in 10th and 11th grade what was she going to take senior year? She is at least 2 years ahead in math, why didn’t she take calc AB first?
In our high school the students doing math or history acceleration are being told what they will be able to choose from every year. Like if they already did Calc in 11 th grade then they only have the option to take a dual enrollment class in lieu of the hs math class senior year because they took all the math available at high school.
And they are required to take math, english, history and science every year.

I agree with all of the above posters. Taking Calc AB after Calc BC would be comparable to taking Algebra I after Algebra II. Tell your friend to pursue an independent study project, take a fun elective that might make her stand out in a sea of drones, self-study an AP, take a study hall so she doesn’t drive herself crazy with all the work, the more creative the option the better it will reflect on your friend.

Do the calculation. Getting A in one subject in senior would not boost the GPA. Even getting the whole first semester of senior all As cannot boost the GPA but only raise the GPA by 1/5 to 1/7 the difference (e.g. 3.3 cumulative from 9-11th grade may go up to 3.4 if all A in 12th grade 1st semester). That single class would not help anything even if the GPA was 2.0 before senior. In addition, it would not be shown in the transcript when applying EA/ED at all. If she is so good in Math, she should have realized that.

As everyone else has said, don’t do it! Can she take something online or self/independant study

Self-study/project, take an elective, or leave it free. Your friend is smart if she took bc as a sophomore, no need to throw it away. She’ll be fine without it even if it costs valedictorian.

I agree with the suggestion about becoming a TA for the AB class. That’s a great way to get to know the teacher (possibly setting up for a good rec).

Since she’s in 11th grade, she could leave it free and self study another AP not offered at the school. The test scores can prove her achievement.

Don’t do it! What a waste of time.

I think she should take something completely different, like welding. Maybe she will like it, maybe she will just have a totally new and interesting experience.
