My son took the SAT test last year. He’s registering to take the ACT this fall. Since the SAT has a writing component, does he need to take the ACT writing test?
Many schools which have a requirement for SAT IIs will waive that requirement for an ACT with W. Some schools will only accept an ACT with W. I would definitely go that way unless he has checked all the schools on his list and they will accept one without.
If the college requires the writing section if you submit ACT, having the SAT writing section will not satisfy that requirement. If he intends to submit ACT to any college that requires its writing section, he will need to do the ACT with writing.
I was told that the ACT W portion was not used for admission purposes. We are scheduled for ACT + W for October. Any retakes will be without the W component. It may depend on the intended major as to whether they use the W portion, but if you’ve got the SAT done, that is probably good enough.
^ It depends on the school. For sure many schools require ACT with writing in the same sitting.
Take the writing. Lots of reasons to do so. Some schools may superscore the ACT, but only of the writing section was taken. Some schools will want to see it for scholarships. And as above, can help skip an SAT II. Take it. But be aware the prompts have changed, and what they are looking for in a response has as well.
