For me it’s:

SOAS in London vs. Gettysburg vs. American University Beirut vs. Trinity Dublin

It will probably be SOAS

there was a full-ride to emory v. suny stony brook

Faber. Knowledge is good.

I don’t think that Pomona vs. Dartmouth is all that strange.

this is the first time on this site. My daughter is trying to decide between Boston University and Norteastern University. She is set on Boston although American Univerity was in the running until yesterday. I was hoping that she would choose Geneseo as we live in NY but that doesn’t seem to be a possibility. Northeastern has a campus like atmosphere and a wonderful COOP program, BU seems to have a better reputation. She keeps going back and forth. Any thoughts?

^^not fascinating at all (as the thread title suggests) but you may want to create your own thread (or actually search the thousands of archived threads that have addressed the BU v Northeastern choice)

@worrywartmom

What about the financial aid packages at Northeastern and BU? If either school will cost you say $50,000 more in cash or loans, go the the less costly option. If money is not an issue, or if the aid packages are the same, I’d say Northeastern for coop.

As rodney said, check out the NU and BU threads on CC for a lot of discussion re:this.

Agreed. 10char

Yale VS Columbia was a tough one for me!!

My kids’ friend, not on cc, is deciding between PennState and Ave Maria. WHAT THE HECK?

USC vs. Carnegie Mellon.

A couple kids from my high school asked about this since USC is close to my home and CMU is where I attend now. USC is a huge party school with tons of school spirit and lots of privileged white kids. CMU is basically the epitome of nerdy introverted techie-ness. USC’s mascot is a gladiator on a horse with a sword; ours is a wimpy piece of fabric. USC kids are hot, tan and painfully naive about reality; CMU kids are awkward, pasty, and experts with Starcraft.

Of course, these stereotypes are just that in a lot of cases - just stereotypes. But it was a funny comparison to make.

Boston University vs Syracuse University.

Northwestern vs Harvey Mudd

that was my decision last year :o

My decision was Colorado College versus Wake Forest…this would definitely be on you list…these schools are polar opposites.

Elon University vs. Boston University.
You can’t get more different.

7 - Conn Coll vs. McGill
Not that far away geographically, but polar opposites in campus culture.

are these two polar opposites!? how so?

WE HAVE A WINNER! It’s Fencersmother with this one:

“My kids’ friend, not on cc, is deciding between PennState and Ave Maria”

Holy Mackeral! Talk about opposites! That’s a head scratcher.

I chose between NYU and Wake Forest.

Haha, in sum, from the threads:

Conn is small, tight-knit, academic, LAC, with much support from faculty/students, an international focus, and is in a small town in New England. It is very campus-centric, and supportive, and they take great pride in their undergraduate focus. (There’s only about 34 or so grad students.) Housing is for all four years.

McGill is a large university in Canada, with many more graduates. It has many more people, a larger campus, and is also academic. Housing is not for all four years, it is less supportive (ie for ‘self starters’/ does not ‘coddle’) less tight knit, and in Montreal, which is a very large city. McGill has TAs whereas Conn does not. It’s more expensive to live in Montreal, as well.

I think diversity was also dicussed, but Conn has about 50% of kids from outside new england (I think that’s what they said) and 53% of McGill’s students are from Quebec. (The numbers in Conn’s catalogue is 903 NE and 1,730 total for 51%) So that really wasn’t a big difference.

Mine has come down to Smith vs. Carnegie Mellon.

Personally, I think it’s a little unusual, but I have my reasons.
