Top 10 (or whatever) Musical Theatre Programs

Pohsmom - my D and I are also doing a college tour this summer in PA although we are from SoCal! We are going to be on vacation in New York and plan to see NYU and maybe Pace and Marymount while in the city. We will also be visiting my brother in Connecticut and will visit Hartt.

My D is just finishing her sophomore year in HS and wants to get a jump on seeing schools this summer so that she can come up with her list that she would like to apply and audition to next year. We are planning to visit Muhlenberg and maybe DeSales, then go to Philly to see UARTs and Temple, then on to Pittsburgh to visit CMU and Point Park. D thinks at this point she would like a BA school or a BFA that offers other liberal arts classes with the MT degree. She has excellant grades in AP and honors classes and is very excited about visiting schools!

Thanks to everyone I have PM'd that have had great suggestions of where to stay and who to contact prior to our visit! This site is such a great wealth of information and I am so happy that my D and I found it early in her process of choosing schools to see and apply to.

I'm in Pittsburgh, so if you need any info on the city, let me know! We also know CMU and Point Park as subscribers to their seasons of shows. My son applied to both schools, and has friends at each one. Have a great trip through PA--and, really, it's never too early to start the college tours!

Showmom858.....When your D looks at NYU, she should speak to people at both Steinhart (BM degree in vocal performance with MT concentration) as well as Tisch (BFA). Steinhardt's academic requirements in music, as well as their liberal arts requirements, appealed to my D. She also liked that they focused on voice.

I'm jealous reading about planning trips. As much of a hassle as it could be, I will miss it. If you have never been to Pittsburgh, try to get there during the day and come in through the tunnel. I just loved that "Aaahh" moment coming out of the tunnel - others who know the city better can elaborate. There are even YouTube videos of it. Pittsburgh was the most pleasant surprise we had. We visited CMU and it was also one of my favorite campuses. My D didn't apply because she is vocal performance and that program is in a rebuilding stage, but I loved everything about the location. If anyone wants to add another to a NY area tour, add Westminster College of the Arts.

catera, is that Rider University and what used to be called "Westminster Choir College"? Did it change its name?

It's now called Westminster Choir College of Rider University

The new name is Westminster College of the Arts. Westminster Choir College is a division of the College of the Arts. WCC remains in Princeton. The remainder of the College of the Arts is on the Rider campus. The School of Fine and Performing Arts is also a division of Westminster College of the Arts - that is where the MT program is.
