Top 10 Things Incoming OU Freshmen (and Parents) Should Know?

Oh I know the plans can change at any moment but I’m still glad she has a plan! BTW, I’m so glad she visited OU as a high school junior, she got lots of GREAT advice about things she could do in her senior year to be better prepared for OU’s meteorology program (adding an online college statistics course senior year, applying for a volunteer internship at our local national weather station…) and yes I know it’s likely she’ll change majors but I’d much rather her working toward a goal, any goal, than twiddling her thumbs… I have two boys at home that would like nothing better than majoring in thumb twiddling when their times comes! As for OU, she’s sold and I highly doubt that will change.

You’re a little of on the honors requirements. They should be this:
Hon 2973 Perspectives on the American Experience
Hon 3993 Colloquim - Modern Africa would be an example of a non-Western.
Hon 3980 Research
Hon 3960 Reading - Will be waived as long as she isn’t a bio major. It’s waived for essentially everyone but bio majors.
9 hours of Honors Electives
MUNM -1113 Understanding Music
METR 2011 Intro to Meteorology
The rest can be satisfied by study abroad.

If you’ll notice, Modern Africa and the Colloquium have the same course number. Any course that is HON 3993 is a colloquium course.

I would not recommend taking the one honors course per semester approach. I would try and get them done as early as possible. As you get into upper level classes, the times become difficult and can conflict quite a bit. That’s why I recommend getting your perspectives and electives done your freshman year, colloquium sophomore year and research whenever she feels like she has a light semester. I don’t think she’ll have trouble doing that, from what I can tell.

In terms of graduating early, it’s complicated. I switched majors a couple times. All were in the same general field (from ChemEngineering to Chemistry to my current, final Chemistry Education) so I didn’t really fall behind, I just didn’t get the jump I could have if I’d come in Chemistry Education. I’m still pretty far ahead though, so I’m only taking 12-14 hours a semester which is needed since I’m working as much as I am (see the student employment thread). I’m taking my time and enjoying my undergraduate experience. Although I won’t be able to graduate until after my fourth year, my fourth year will be light on course load, so I’ll begin my graduate classes and should finish my masters after my fifth year.

I would not recommend a German minor and this is coming from someone who took six years of German in high school and have been there twice. It’s very difficult to get a German minor here. Even if you score a 5 on the AP test, you have to take 15 more hours of German, with 12 of them being upper division.

As far as other minors, I don’t feel like they’re particularly important. Let her do whatever she wants. If she doesn’t like anything else, don’t bother with a minor. I think it’s better to graduate early than to take classes you hate to get a minor you don’t want that won’t really help you.

It sounds like you and her definitely have a plan and that’s great. If I could make a suggestion it would be to just let her know every now and then that it’s okay to change her plan. I have a couple friends who came in with a definite plan and want to change it but are terrified of telling their parents because they planned it all together. I’m sure their parents will be okay with it, but they’re still afraid. Just a reminder that it’s okay to change every now can help everyone out.
