Top 10 U.S. Universities in Terms of International Prestige and Name-Recognition

ok i dont know how to work this thing.. and i have a question along the lines of fake out. so
my gpa's:
freshmen:3.4
sophmore:3.3
junior:2.43 ( iknow its horrible)
what are my chances of any college like pennstate (college park)? umd (collge park or umbc) or any state college

my s.a.t scores are much better i got a 1450 the old version does that mean anything.. do i have a chance at any college?

you need to take the new sat. most colleges that i know of won't accept the old one.

You should be okay at Penn State if you can fix your grades this year.

hey look! the City College of San Francisco student is talking again! Lets watch him bash a school he can only dream about going to. So exciting. Go Ubermensch! Go! Be as elitist as you can... even though you're in community college.

this is not a chances post...

I would put Berkeley above Stanford, even though Stanford is higher ranked. I think the name recognition is bigger.

Harvard
MIT
Berkeley
Yale
Stanford
Cornell
Caltech
Princeton
Columbia

Something like that...

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Stanford
MIT
Columbia
Duke
Cal Tech
Georgetown
Berkeley

Yeah, but schools like Berkeley and Stanford will always have a higher recognition to Asian countries since they are on the West Coast and closest to Asia. Geographical locations play a big part in other countries being familiar with them. That's what I was told by several people from other parts of the world.

Berkeley number 1

Does the world know about Duke? I would say the west coast doesn't "know" DUKE like the east or the south.

My relatives from out of country don't really know about it.

Those that have heard of it think its a hospital (which it is)

why are ppl concerned if some farmer in Africa or some pharmicisit in Korea knows of your school when you have no intention of living or working in those places. I mean, is it an ego thing like to know that your school is respected by some random dude in a 3rd world country. Who cares!!!! If you care so mich, go to Cal Berk and call it a day.

I agree with DRab, the name recognition of Duke in California is not the tops. I did not even realize how prestigious it was until I was on the East Coast for summer school.

omg, northwestern in cali unknown period. NO ONE knows of it.

Why is it named Northwestern? Was it named when it actually was Northwestern in the US?

* I mean, is it an ego thing like to know that your school is respected by some random dude in a 3rd world country.*

Seems to me like it's just a reason to feel better about yourself.

I agree with collegekid. I also was ignorant of Amherst and Swarthmore, and mildly uninformed about Williams as well. At least I knew about the LACs in Cali like Claremont and Pomona, but otherwise, I felt like I was so oblivious in comparison to my East Coast buddies.

Yeah, i agree about northwestern: the west coast knows as little about this school as it does Duke.

i know of northwestern...

Harvard

UPenn (Wharton)

Stanford

Yale

MIT

Cornell

Berkeley

Princeton

Columbia

Chicago

I did not include Brown, Dartmouth, and UVA because many people abroad don’t really know about them.

Harvard is the most recognized. MIT and Cambridge have an exchange program. Chicago and the London School of Economics have always been partners- plus Chicago has an MBA program in London. A Wharton degree is like gold in “The City”, London’s financial district.

Harvard and Yale have the most participants in the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race watched by over 500 million people around the world.

Believe it or not many of my friends in Europe never heard of Northwestern. Some people confuse Caltech with Berkeley.
