totally disagree.

whether it is due to the Grad School "halo" effect that many other US schools benefit from (e.g. Cal, Michigan, etc.),

UPenn (due to Wharton) is one America's most widely known and respected institutions globally.

In Europe, for instance, Wharton's alliance with Europe's top business school, INSEAD, has only strengthened UPenn's standing and reputation abroad:

http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/campus/alliance/

I meant in India lol

in korea, it's something like:

Harvard

MIT

Princeton

Yale

Stanford/Berkeley/UCLA

Columbia

UPenn/Cornell

Johns Hopkins

UMich

In Mexico:

Harvard

Stanford

Yale

Princeton

Berkeley

Penn (Wharton)

UCLA

Notre Dame

Columbia/Cornell

UT Austin

in taiwan

Harvard

Yale

MIT

Berkeley

Princeton

Cornell

Stanford

UCLA

nothing else really matters

Interesting thread...

I'll have to disagree with shrek2004. In Taiwan, the list is more like:

Harvard

Stanford

MIT

Berkeley

and the rest

Yale and Princeton aren't very well known here. Most people I've met haven't even heard of Princeton. But then, that's just Taiwan.

I would agree that UC-Berkeley has a great reputation in Asia.
Here's what I think:
1. Harvard (Seems like everyone agrees on this)
2. Yale
3. UPenn/Stanford/MIT/Princeton
5. UC-Berkeley (It is way overrated in certain ways)
6. Columbia/Caltech
7. UChicago

UCLA would be in the top 15, maybe 20.

48302- how the hell did UPenn get to third place tie with Stanford/MIT/Princeton? Most people don't even know that UPenn is a public university. I disagree completely with your ranking and your assertion that Berkeley is way overrated in certain ways.

for those of you who say berkeley is overrated, on the basis of what? this thread is about international prestige and name-recognition, and both are earned by top notch grad programs and research, and berkeley is clearly one of the best when it comes to that.

i also disagree with those who say UPenn has great international prestige and name-recognition. for the most part, europe is probably the only region that recognizes UPenn. (even most americans don't know about UPenn.. what? Penn state?). besides their MBA program, most of its graduate departments aren't relatively strong anyway.

We all pretty much agree that Harvard has the biggest international reputation. After that, the most widely recognized schools are Princeton, Yale, Stanford, MIT, CalTech, and Berkeley in any order you want. In Asia, schools that have strong scientific research and engineering programs, especially at the graduate level, are more well-known (which is why Berkeley is so highly regarded). Many people in Asia haven't even heard of the Ivies outside of HYP.

1.Harvard
2.Stanford
3.MIT
4.Yale
5.Princeton
6.Columbia
7.Upenn
8.Brown
9.Cornell
10.Berkeley

brown > cornell and berkeley?

...no

I think it's because I'm from central ny and cornell doesn't seem like as big of a deal here... and I'm not as farmiliar with Berkeley so I may have underestimated them

Cal-Berkeley

go anywhere in the world and this name will crumble most of the Ivies.

If you aren't asian or you don't have any asian relatives in Asia, you wouldn't know how big Berkeley's reputation is, especially in HK.

P.S. Read the news. UC Berkeley recently recieved $40 million from the rich entrepreneur Li Ka Shing.

http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2005/06/23_lks.shtml

People don't just giveaway money to just some random university, clearly UC Berkeley's reputation is extremely high.

Coming from China (I was born in China), I can tell you that there is probably 4 or 5 schools that have godlike prestige in China... and Brown,Cornell,Penn is definitely not part of it.

Harvard
Stanford
MIT
Berkeley
Yale

Harvard is on top.. you can mix and match the other 4 anyway you want. Remember, this thread is about international prestige, not "central ny" prestige or "suburbia" prestige.

Berkeley is pretty darn amazing. I never heard of such an unselective school ranking alongside the most selective schools in the country in terms of prestige. Why bother to work your butt off in high school, be at the top of your class, and go to an ivy like Columbia when you can just lounge in the back of the room, smoke weed all day, get mediocre grades and go to berkeley! I mean, the prestige of Berkeley is higher.

The moral of the story is:

Be mediocre and get into Berkeley. If you're bright, make sure you're bright enough to get into HYSMP. Otherwise, you'll end up at a lesser ivy while your lazier friends end up at Berkeley. Oh the irony.

It seems that you are dissatisfied with the idea that you may be working harder than many others only to end up at the same school who the people who didn't work as hard.

Reminds me of high school when there were students who took tough AP courses and didn't get into Berkeley, while some who didn't take any AP courses at all got into Berkeley. It does **** me off that I had to work hard for 4 years while these two people got by high school easily and we all end up going to the same school.
