French swimmer Clement Lefert is a USC alumnus and won the Gold Medal in the 400M Free Relay

The Pac 12 is extremely well represented in these games with

Watch out for the Oregon Ducks distance runners in London.

 1. Galen Rupp
 2. Matthew Centrowitz
 3. Andrew Wheating
 4. Matt Tegenkamp

The track and field program at Oregon is synonymous with prestige and excellence. It helps that Phil Knight, the founder of Nike, is an alumni of Oregon and loves the school.

I remember watching Matt Centrowitz Sr. while at Oregon, not to mention Steve Prefontaine, Rudy Chapa, Joaquim Cruz, Mary Decker…What a powerhouse decade.

And the crazy thing is Matt Centrowitz Jr. almost beat Asbel Kiprop of Kenya in the 1500m at the world championships last year!

My favorite story is Michigan-Bangladeshi gymnast Syque Ceasar. Born in Florida to Bangladeshi immigrant parents, Caesar holds dual Bangladeshi-U.S. citizenship. After earning a spot as a varsity gymnast at Michigan and doing quite well at it, advancing to captain of his Michigan team, he gave in to his parents’ urging and agreed to represent Bangladesh at the South Central Asian Artistic Gymnastic Competition last December, where he won Bangladesh’s first gold medal ever in an international gymnastics competition. He won gold on the parallel bars, silver in the vault, bronze on the floor exercise, and bronze all-around. He quickly became something of a national hero and is now representing Bangladesh as part of a 5-member national team.

Matt Tegenkamp is a Univ. of Wisconsin Badger, not a Univ. of Oregon Duck.

And of these four guys only Rupp has a shot at actually winning a medal - maybe at best a bronze if he runs the race of his life.

Northwestern currently has 2 people in the Olympics:

Matt Grevers - Won gold in the 100-meter breaststroke and set an Olympic record

Jake Herbert - competing in wrestling (not til next week)

And Northwestern hosted the US Olympics track and field trials 100 years ago on the site of what is now Ryan Field (the stadium).

^I really don’t think Michigan can claim any credit for Micheal Phelps. Michael Phelps was a pro and just took some classes at Michigan.

“Michael Phelps has trained under Bob Bowman since he was 11 years old.” He got 6 Golds already in 2004 Olympics before he followed Bowman to Michigan when the univeristy hired Bowman as the head coach. This is all about what goes on between Michael and Bowman. “After the 2008 Summer Olympics, Bowman returned to Baltimore as CEO at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. Phelps also returned to Baltimore with Bowman.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Phelps

17 current Penn State Olympians in this summers games

University of Notre Dame: 13 athletes, 1 gold, 4 bronze, 5 medals total

Molly Huddle ('06) - 5,000 meter (11th place)
Shannan Boxx ('99) - women’s soccer (gold)
Melissa Tancredi ('04) - women’s soccer (bronze for Canada)
Candace Chapman ('05) - women’s soccer (bronze for Canada)
Courtney Hurley ('13) - women’s team epee bronze
Kelley Hurley ('10) - women’s team epee bronze
Lee Kiefer ('16) - individual foil (lost in semi to silver medalist)
Gerek Meinhardt ('13) - men’s team foil
Selim Nurudeen ('05) - 110 meter hurdles for Nigeria
Natalie Achonwa ('14) - women’s basketball for Canada
Mariel Zagunis (flag bearer who came up short on 3rd gold medal in fencing)

Sam Lee, Phelps enrolled at the University of Michigan where he was a student for four years. During that time, he was coached by the University of Michigan coach and practicied with Michigan swimmers in University facilities. Just because he could not compete for the University of Michigan does not mean he id not affiliated to the University.

University of Michigan was lucky to have Bowman for three short years and now some alums want to have their school to claim credits for Phelps’ success when all the credits should belong to Bowman and Phelps himself. He’s way ahead of Michigan swimmers and didn’t need to practice with them to get better.

He’s never a student athlete there; he’s was never recruited as such; he never enrolled as a degree-seeking student and never went through the competitive admission process. He just had a brief stink taking few classes. In short, he’s not a Wolverwine.

^In addition, Phelps was listed as a “volunteer assistant coach” during his time at Michigan. There’s no question Phelps was a Michigan student and heavily involved with the Michigan swim team during his four years there. I also think there’s no question he would have been a varsity Michigan swimmer had he not been barred by NCAA eligibility rules. And the fact is, Michigan does claim him, proudly, as part of a very strong tradition of swimming at Michigan that claims, inter alia, 55 Olympic medals in swimming before this year’s haul.

And I’ll bet if Missy Franklin turns pro so she can accept all the prize money that’s owed her along with the millions in endorsements she’s presently worth, and ends up at Cal (it’s said to be her #1 choice) to earn her degree while training for international competitions and the 2016 Rio Olympics with the Cal swimmers under the Cal women’s swimming coach on terms similar to those Phelps had at Michigan, Cal will not hesitate to claim her, either.

Not just the alums. The University’s official athletic department website, mgoblue.com, claims Michael Phelps as well. They’ve chronicled his every accomplishment during his four years at Michigan, and listed him on their roster of Michigan athletes and coaches participating in the London Olympics. Why not? He was a Michigan student who just happened to be barred from intercollegiate athletics by NCAA eligibility rules. That doesn’t make him not a Michigan student, someone who elected to attend college there and did attend college there.
