top 15 most prestigious universities

For once, I have to agree with one of Alexandre's famous lists.

A couple of small suggestions would be to add that in the South, many people would find Texas A&M as prestigious as UT-Austin. There is some truth behind the old joke that asks. "What do you call a fifth year Aggie?" The answer is ... Boss!

And the second is that Claremont's Harvey Mudd should be in one or two of the lists --the West and the techies/engineers.

Since Alexandre's West Coast list contains only 11 schools (including non-HYP Ivy Columbia), I would suggest the addition of Penn to that list based on the following:

Last year, Penn received more applications from California than from any other state.

LA's prestigious Harvard-Westlake School has sent more graduates to Penn--by far--than to any other school except UC Berkeley and USC.

Wharton.

"Are those in order? Or are they simply schools that are prestigious?"

GlueEater, the prestige grouping according to academe and internationally are from most to least prestigious. The remaining groups are alphabetical.

There is an international ranking, very well known, but I don't recall its name. It seemed relatively good.

And I don't think Brown or Dartmouth would be considered more internationally known than some of the schools you left out, notably Northwestern. This is because both Brown and Dartmouth lack a number of graduate programs.

I still don't think any of the claremont colleges are very highly viewed. Ok sure it's in CA so it'll have more pestige here than in say Texas. But its place here isn't anywhere near those other schools. Harvey Mudd maybe in the engineering circles, but not pomona or CMC.

Also, of course Penn would get more apps from CAians than any other state, it's an ivy and CA is the biggest state.

Alexandre, I really like your list, and I would reaffirm how regional school preferences are. At home on the East Coast, Vanderbilt, Rice, Emory, Northwestern, Chicago, and to some extent even Stanford are not "wow" schools. Here in the midwest, I've talked to a lot of students who had to make a tough call between "wow" Notre Dame and less "wow" Chicago. My friend from Texas was between "wow" Rice and Vanderbilt, and less "wow" Chicago.

I've mentioned the schools that I thought were "wow" before I became acquainted with the Ivy League et al. These schools were: William and Mary, UVA, Georgetown, UCLA, Harvard, Yale, and Berkeley. They were schools I read about in my history textbooks and schools I saw on TV and images I saw on sweatshirts. I don't think it was until sophomore or junior year of high school-- whenever it was I first laid eyes on USNWR, when I could tell what was "good," what was less so, and where schools like Columbia, Penn, and Brown fit into the scene.

I have incorporated some of your thoughts into this list. Here it is, revised accordingly.

not to be mean spirited, but you should revise that list again because when you categorize it by region, you have schools all over the country in one particular region. Yale is not on the West Coast, Stanford is not in the Midwest.

That's perception in the Midwest and West Coast.. the schools don't have to be in the region to be well regarded there.

And I would put Chicago in place of Northwestern for conservatives. Chicago is the place where all those free market economists came out of after all.

cthomp, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford and Yale are prestigious in every circle.

Idk, when I was 5-15 I knew of Harvard and Princeton but I never heard about Stanford. I mean, I hear OF it, I just never knew it was a biggie school. Actually, growing up in CA I actually said to myself in the 4th grade "I want to go to UCLA, if I can't get in I'll go to Stanford" lol.

Well, as someone who has traveresed the realm of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy for a few years now, I would say the Chicago is the most revered school amongst the educated right. It is the home of Milton Friedman, Leo Strauss, Allan Bloom, David Brooks, John Podhoretz, Thomas Sowell, F. A. Hayek, and the entire Chicago school of economics. I would remove Northwestern and Duke, and add Harvard (Bill Kristol, Harvey Mansfield, the Thurnstroms, etc.) and Chicago.

I have made a couple of additions. I agree that for fiscal conservatives, Chicago belongs on the list, I also added Tulane for prestige in the South.

In support of zarathustra's point, Chicago is "The University" for conservative thought, at least according to the WSJ:

[quote]
Harvard is also a much less important intellectual hub than it once was. The University of Chicago, for one, has wielded much more influence in recent decades. It is no exaggeration to say that Chicago laid the intellectual foundation for the conservative ascendancy and nurtured the ideas that now drive the debate over economic policy, legal theory and foreign affairs. The key ideas of the so-called Reagan Revolution, including monetarism and deregulation, trace their origins back to the free-market theorizing of Chicago's economics department. (One striking measure of the department's clout: Of the 55 economists awarded the Nobel Prize since 1969, when economics was added to the roster, 10 have taught at Chicago and an additional 13 either trained at Chicago or had previously taught there. Harvard, by contrast, has had four faculty winners.)

One of those Chicago Nobel laureates, Ronald Coase, is acknowledged to be the godfather of law and economics, unquestionably the most influential branch of legal theory in the past quarter-century. (It applies economic reasoning to legal questions.) And while Harvard certainly has its superstars, when you look at the people who have taught at Chicago in the past 40 years or so--Milton Friedman, Richard Posner, Allan Bloom, Leo Strauss, Robert Lucas, Albert Wohlstetter, Richard Epstein, Leon Kass, Saul Bellow, Martha Nussbaum--it is pretty clear which school has been giving off more heat.

If you're going off the USNWR Peer Assessment score, your list should knock UCLA below UVa, and include UNC-Chapel Hill and Carnegie Mellon.

this seems to have turned into the vandy/uchicago thresd, but can someone compare vandy and ND?

alexandre....you are so wrong...HARVARD IS NOT the 4th most prestigious uni in the souuth...its number 1....EVERYWEHRE...talk to people on teh street.....STANFORD NO TNEAR THE TOP OF THE WEST COAST LIST>....ur jsut so wrong.....

That's because with the exception of the first two (which are based on the Peer Assessment score), my lists are alphabetical.

Best Schools in the Nations Ranked by Me:

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Derek Zoolander Center For College Students Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too

Ferris Bueller High School for College Students

Mrs. Puff's Boat Driving School in Bikini Bottom

The Jedi Academy (closed due to Sith influences)

Professor Xavier's School for the Gifted

I got rejected from all my top schools, but I did get into Derek Zoolander Center For College Students Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too, so I'm really satisfied! Class of 2012! Woot!!!

I read through this thread and noticed a lot of people talking about how Vandy is super prestigious in the South; I don't think that's necessarily true.

Here in Texas, by far the most prestigious school besides HYPS is Rice. After Rice is probably MIT, Duke, Cal Tech.

University of Chicago and Notre Dame are both far more well known where I am from than Vanderbilt. I live in an upper class neighborhood in Dallas/Ft.Worth by the way.
