top 15 most prestigious universities

Dude, that's why it's called prestige. :p

i agree with NeoEpisteme, in Texas, Rice is considered to be a very top notch school. It all depends on region, I mean, in Tennessee, Vanderbilt is probably king, Georgia has Emory, and in North Carolina...well, let's just say that not all North Carolinians think Duke is such a "down-to-earth" school.

Way to totally derail this awesome thread, dude.

My first visit to this arena--sounds between quarrelsome and very interesting.

Easiest thing to do, is to take out the top 16 usnews undergrad ranking (ends at northwestern), then eliminate one school to meet the "top 15" criteria.

The most imprtant things in my opinion for prestige are admissions rate and sat ranges.

Chicago has a 40 percent admin rate, that's way too high, sorry it should be down to number 25. It's sat ranges are high, but a 40 percet admin rate is ridiculous.

Rice has a 22 percent admin rate and high sat ranges, it should be top 13.

Emory has a high acceptance rate and lower sat scores, it should be number 30.

my 2 centz.

chicago is not "prestigious"- it is an outstanding university- i would consider it top 10- but it is not top 15 most prestigiious- aka name recognition/famousness (i dont thinkk thats a word)

admin rate has no correlation with prestigiousness

admin rate definetely has a correlation with prestigiousness.

Is it sheer coincidence that the most prestigious universities, HYPSM, all have the lowest admin rates?

I mean, where is the prestige and bragging rights if nearly half the applicants get in?

seriously?

But if you get into a place with a 24 percent of less acceptance rate (with high sat scores), you're one in twenty thousand (or w/e), you did what many others couldn't do, you get prestige.

Emory has no business being tied with Rice, which has much higher sat scores and and a loswer admin rate.

U Chicago, Cornell, Chicago, Northwestern, and Johns Hopkins should definetely ALL be below Rice. Rice is more prestigious academically, and it's way harder to get in.

That being said, Dartmouth has NO business being ranked lower than UChicago in terms of prestigiousness or us news ranking.

seriously

i have nothing to say for Vanderbilt because i have no idea what it is.

i do have utter respect for UChicago and Rice crowds, but i dunno. a person above me is little bit inflammatory w/ his love for Rice.

also same thing goes with WUSTL. i thought it was an amazing school, but i don't think it's being mentioned as much as it should.

383 is clearly strange midwest skewed thinking. Wisconsin, Mich, NU on a list without Duke and Dartmouth!!??**@@!!

Before we start calling institutions of higher learning 'prestigious', we should look at the meaning of the 'word'. It is a derivative of 'praestigum', meaning delusion, or trickery. Another meaning is 'pomposity'. I wouldn't like my alma mater called 'pompous'(although it may be). Here we go.

i hate using this word, but jmanco, you're retarded.

No I'm not.

Harvard
Stanford
Princeton
New York University
Yale
Brown
Columbia
Cornell
Univ. of Southern California
UCLA
Notre Dame
Duke
MIT

The above are "Dream Schools" for students and parents, according to the Princeton Review. It's only 13 schools, but one could throw in CIT, UPenn, and Dartmouth.

NYU?!

Lots and lots of people could get into NYU with ease.

agreed. 10char

no i'm not.

you're using infantile language.

lol (10 char)

Michigan should be on the list. It's a virtual tie with Berkeley and UCLA.

ivy+plus (10 schools), duke, caltech....

then i will just name all the schools that immediately come to my mind

wustl, uchicago, rice, berkeley, northwestern, johns hopkins...

well, that makes it 18.

i guess ill need to eliminate 3 of them...

eliminate uchic, berkely, johns hopkins.

their acceptance rates are too high
